We have gas powered central heating or electric oil filled radiators. I don't get why you have water in plastic pipes. I have only ever seen metal ones here, about an inch wide. Are plastic ones healthier?

I assume you are use to seeing this type of pipe?

Copper is not cheep. Plastic (PVC) is.

Copper has to be soldered together with silver. Plastic is melted together.

Copper water hammers, plastic does not.

Copper freezes an busts easier than plastic.

Even our water mains are plastic. I have not seen copper pipe used anywhere in probably 30 years.

The main thing is that plastic is just easier. Putting copper pipe in a house takes a lot of skill an training. A monkey can be tough to put in plastic pipe. A 3 year old can watch it done once an be able to do it.
