I came across a picture on the internet of a chicken that had very long nails on its feet. New to owning chickens I haven’t read in care guide about clipping their nails. I figured with all the scratching they do it keeps their nails at a healthy length. Is it common for a chicken to have long nail? If not what could have caused it!

Healthy birds that have plenty of substrate to scratch through, plus some hard surfaces to whittle on (I provide rocks, bricks and concrete blocks in the run), shouldn't have issues with nail growth for the most part.

Main exception is if you have 5 toed birds then the extra toe may not even make contact with the ground, so those nails may need to be trimmed on occasion.
