MAY 2016 "Land of the Free Because of the brave!" Hatch-a-Long Hosted by, Mike & Sally

My Bielefelder eggs are on the way! Should be officially joining soon.  It's gonna be a challenge with this broody cause her nest is not very accessible.  Might not be able to candle. The whole time I'll just be crossing my fingers that there won't be exploding eggs or predator attacks!

Papa's Poultry usually sends some extras so I will probably stick a few eggs in the incubator too. I'll make sure to bleach it this time so hopefully I won't have any chicks with omphalitis like last time.

I never candled my broody s eggs. First time mom so I just let her be.. We only got 2 chicks but it is the cutest thing I have ever seen.

Here are some pictures of my latest chicks from your rooster!! These were cooked in the incubator.

I wish I could have seafood, but we are so landlocked all there is is red lobster restaurant. Or freezer burnt shrimp or canned tuna. But this state has a bar and a casino on every block. And at least one brewery in every town. Man, if I were on the coast, I'd be eating fish and lobster!
My poor turkey egg is lonely looking In the incubator... The chicken eggs are going to be crazy. I already put all the breeders back into the main group so I could put the oldest babies into that pen... There are 10 Marans hens, one Marans roo, 25 cream Legbars and 2 Legbar roos, so at least that limits what sort of babies there will be.

Nobody has mentioned eating turtle! Snapping turtle is really pretty good. The only thing is the way the pieces move in the skillet. Crawdads in New Orleans; mouth watering! Adventuresome food is a good thing.

I am hatching so much my head is spinning. Here are a few of the recent ones.

This is a surprise tonight from the group I didn't realize it was lockdown 3 days ago. Blue Copper Marans.

They are gorgeous! I still want some in the Fall. :) I love the gray one.
I wasn't planning on hatching any more chicks till the Fall but I ended up deciding it would be ok to hatch some if they are sex-linked. This hatching thing is getting to be a habit....I wouldn't have but I just want to give my little broody a chance to be a mom.

There is a lot of wild food out there. There are sego lilies and yucca and wild onions and wild roses and chokecherries, skunkweed sumac, huckleberries, raspberries, golden currants, wild plums, asparagus ( in season right now!) Horseradish, Jerusalem artichokes, and there's these abandoned homesteader orchards with pears, apples, and crabapes. I love foraging! My DH thinks I'm nuts. But my family is from here and they are half mad scientist, half rancher. DH is a Californian. Go figure. Not to say anything wrong with it, just different ideas about things. Different definitions for adventure.

I candled the Silkie eggs under the "Electric Hen" and 5/6 are developing with one clear... pretty good so far!

I put 7 more in an incubator this evening. I love an endless supply of Silkie eggs, it's like a dream come true.

I have one on day 17 and a bunch more on day 13 and day 10. I just want them to hatch already!!
