I let mine live out their lives. Most of them stop laying by 6 or 7 yrs old. I've had 13+ yr old hens.

That's what I do. Even though the oldest hen is the least of my favorites, she still gave us eggs and baby chicks her whole life and still adds to our yard decor even though some days she just stays in the coop. It's okay. She's part of the family.
