We're new to Backyard chickens. :frowWe're getting our coop and everything ready at this time but no chickens yet, 5/2023. We live in a hot arid environment so dealing with heat and all the pests that come with that will be our biggest challenges. We had chickens once before for a few months then found we had to move suddenly and the chickens went to other farms. We know we like chickens but this time we can't do free range and will keep them confined in a run in the backyard to keep them safe from the in-town predators of stray cats, owls, foxes, hawks and occasional coyote and snakes -- but that will not be as much fun! City ordinances allow no more than 4 chickens and no roosters. I've been looking over the breeds and am smitten with the Welsummer. The hype over the Welsummer says they're relatively quiet, docile and can become close pets as well. Quiet will be good as we have some grumpy neighbors :barnieso hope it's true!
