Unfortunately, here in my county (Multnomah, OR) if a cat comes in my fenced backyard and one of my dogs kills it, the dog could be deemed 'vicious' for killing a domestic animal. Needless to say, if it ever did happen, I wouldn't be telling anybody.

I feel bad for the hen and the cat, but not for the cat's owners.

I live way out in the country and encounter coons, cats, minks, etc. I encounter a wild cat occasionally sitting outside the pen watching my chickens. I have invested too much into them to hope critters won't somehow make their way in. Plain and simple, if they are still there when I come back out with my 22, it's one less critter I have to worry about. It may sound cruel but I didn't raise them to the point where they are just ready to start laying only to be a meal for a unwelcome guest.
