WOOHOO! My pullets are 20.5wks today, and my RIR Peggy squatted for me for the first time! WOOHOO!

Can't be long till eggs now!!

Hi,

I'm new here and new to chickens. I have 9 hens and one just started laying (not sure which one it is yet). When you say your chicken is squatting what does that mean? My Dominique (who is usually anti-social) just froze when I went to pet her. Her head was down and her wings were out a bit. Is this what you're talking about and is that a sign of a hen who is soon to be laying? Do they do it all the time once they reach maturity.

That's the squat! Means she's ready to mate, and hence, about ready to lay. They don't all do it for their humans, but most tame ones will.
