Hello!
We are located in NE WI. We just got our first batch of dual purpose chicks. Delaware and Silver Laced Wyandotte breeds. We are brooding them indoors in a “chick tent” for now until the weather warms up more. They will move to our garage with supplemental heat once it’s in the 50’s at night and then to their coop a few weeks after.
I made an MHP for their supplemental heat and they seem to like sleeping under it but only go under it for brief times during the day. They are usually running around, very active or they take little breaks and sit on top of the heat also.
Just wondering for others who have used an Momma heating pad method if that is typical behavior. Everyone seems content. They get a little more vocal in the evening right before dark but I assume it’s because they’re babies and nervous about the night coming. We have a very low light nightlight for them right now while they’re very young.
Had a little pasting on a couple chicks the second day here after they woke up but haven’t had any further issues or reoccurrence of it. They all seem to be eating and drinking and playing just fine. I guess I imagined them to hang out under the heat more than at night but the room they’re in is also cozy in the 70s too.
We’re so excited to be chicken people and are looking forward to watching them grow and become our family flock.
