Why did the disciples abandoned Jesus when he was arrested by the Roman soldiers?

Hi and welcome to this thread :frow
They were scared of being arrested and executed with Jesus. Peter was so fearful that he even denied that he had known Jesus when asked about him.

:hit not Peter. I liked him :(

Well, Peter was later crucified upside down, right?

Yeah :/ But the disciples were only human and reacted to situations the way most people would. Peter was really remorseful once he realized what he had done.

Luke 22:54-62
54 Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house, and Peter was following at a distance. 55 And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. 56 Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with him.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” 58 And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” 59 And after an interval of about an hour still another insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” 62 And he went out and wept bitterly.

Yes he was, him and his wife.

Thats so sad! Has anybody here ever heard of the magazine "Voice of the Martyrs"?

I didn't know his wife was too :(
No. What is that?

Wow sad :/

And pretty sad Jesus predicted he would deny him so much and he did :(

But I mean, being in the midst of the soldiers he probably thought he'd be arrested or killed and he probably would. Versus saying he's with him when theyre not right there

But at the same time, even though he was scared, shouldn't he have still stuck with Jesus? I mean, we were just saying how even though I was scared about the volunteering/calling thing we're supposed to get over it and step out in faith anyway and trust God & Jesus and the whole Bible is like all about that right? So why wouldn't he do it.....??

Why did the disciples abandoned Jesus when he was arrested by the Roman soldiers?
Because they were afraid they would also be taken by the soldiers. They also didn't fully understand that Jesus was fulfilling all of the scriptures about the Messiah. They expected the Messiah, the King of the Jews to overthrow the Roman oppression, and set up a kingdom that Jesus would rule at that time.

Genesis 48New American Standard Bible (NASB)
Israel’s Last Days

48 Now it came about after these things that Joseph was told, “Behold, your father is sick.” So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim with him. 2 When it was told to Jacob, “Behold, your son Joseph has come to you,” Israel collected his strength and sat up in the bed. 3 Then Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, 4 and He said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and numerous, and I will make you a company of peoples, and will give this land to your descendants after you for an everlasting possession.’ 5 Now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are. 6 But your offspring that have been born after them shall be yours; they shall be called by the names of their brothers in their inheritance. 7 Now as for me, when I came from Paddan, Rachel died, to my sorrow, in the land of Canaan on the journey, when there was still some distance to go to Ephrath; and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).”
8 When Israel saw Joseph’s sons, he said, “Who are these?” 9 Joseph said to his father, “They are my sons, whom God has given me here.” So he said, “Bring them to me, please, that I may bless them.” 10 Now the eyes of Israel were so dim from age that he could not see. Then Joseph brought them close to him, and he kissed them and embraced them. 11 Israel said to Joseph, “I never expected to see your face, and behold, God has let me see your children as well.” 12 Then Joseph took them from his knees, and bowed with his face to the ground. 13 Joseph took them both, Ephraim with his right hand toward Israel’s left, and Manasseh with his left hand toward Israel’s right, and brought them close to him. 14 But Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, crossing his hands, although Manasseh was the firstborn. 15 He blessed Joseph, and said,
“The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,
The God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day,
16 The angel who has redeemed me from all evil,
Bless the lads;
And may my name live on in them,
And the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac;
And may they grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.”
17 When Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on Ephraim’s head, it displeased him; and he grasped his father’s hand to remove it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. 18 Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn. Place your right hand on his head.” 19 But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know; he also will become a people and he also will be great. However, his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations.” 20 He blessed them that day, saying,
“By you Israel will pronounce blessing, saying,
‘May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh!’”
Thus he put Ephraim before Manasseh. 21 Then Israel said to Joseph, “Behold, I am about to die, but God will be with you, and bring you back to the land of your fathers. 22 I give you one portion more than your brothers, which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and my bow.”
How ironic that Jacob, who stole the birth right of his brother Esau, should end up giving the greater blessing to the younger son of Joseph.

Quote: There is much to like about Peter. But, Peter, is very much like many of us. He's impulsive, and often acts without thinking his actions through. His impulsive actions prompted him to jump out of the boat into the water. He walked on the water with Jesus! Then, when he realized what he had done, fear took over, and he sank.

Matthew 14:
25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
29 “Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
Gotta love him... He was one of the three in the Inner Circle of the disciples. After the resurrection, after Peter received the Holy Spirit, he grew to become a mighty man of God. Would I stand firm against the possibility of death? Would I deny my Jesus to save my own skin? There may come a time in my life time when I will be put to that test. Many of Jesus followers in other countries face that test on a daily basis. Persecution even to the point of death is a reality for many people outside our country. That day may come here in our lifetime. So, I look at Peter, and know that some day, I will be faced with a similar test. How will I respond?

Because he lacked faith. All of us are called daily to live for Jesus, and yet, why do some of us not? Would we deny Jesus if our life was at stake?

These verses can also be applied to our lives. As peter became afraid and he started sinking, it is an example of how during trials and troubles of this life we would indeed start to sink into the waves. We need God to help us, to care for us to comfort us. We must always remember we should keep our eyes on him not the great big waves around us, because without him we will sink....,

You are right, what he should have done was stuck with Jesus but he didn't. I don't think that anyone was saying that what Peter did was right, it was just understandable. Pressure can make or break a person, and it broke Peter and he gave into fear. I think everyone here hopes that if we are ever put under that type of pressure where we fear for our lives that we do what's right. And don't deny our Savior and God.

I pray that if I'm ever put into that position that I'll stick by Jesus. This life isn't whats important, all our lifes on earth will end, but where we spend eternity is the most important. We will all have to confess our sins to Jesus, and i don't want to tell Him that i denied Him!
