I agree @KDOGG331 .. it seems hypocritical, but then it always makes me stop and think about my own choices and actions... And I respect his decision to stand by his faith and we do not put up a tree etc, and he honors my request to spend the day with my family, who do have a tree. We work it out to the best of both of our abilities. I can understand his reasoning behind scriptures not saying anything about remembering Jesus's birth, so that's the reason he doesn't celebrate it. Because where scriptures are silent, we really should discern carefully what would be considered "righteous" and good behavior. Overspending and spoiling our children is not good conduct, per se. Of course there's no Christmas, or pianos in Scripture, because they are of OUR invention, not commanded by the Lord.... So you see where I can agree with him in that respect. I have to wonder if my "wanting" anything at all other than what God wants from me is in fact, coveting. I make myself an idol in that respect. I'm making myself first. Not good, it can be a slippery slope.
But as far as being good and righteous and holy in behavior, but not depending on the Holy Spirit and our salvation to aid in that... I always think of these verses...
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:8-10 ESV

So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, "You have faith and I have works." Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
James 2:17-18 ESV

That always seemed contradictory to me... But scriptures are not ever contradictory
We grow to do the good works. We don't do them to earn a way to salvation. We ask for guidance from the Holy Spirit daily, feed it with the Word, and we grow. We repent of our sins as we discover them, and learn how to use the full armor of God to keep Satan from tempting us too much. It starts with the inner self, our heart. We can't clean the outside behavior for real without faith in Jesus Christ changing our hearts and minds.
It's like your paper... Of course, I'm praying for you to get it done, and done well... But mostly, for you to be able to give the worry to God and let His peace give you rest and rehabilitation... This is a good little example of growing in the spirit, the more we learn the hard lessons, the more we learn and change and grow. I used to leave things to the last minute all the time lol. I felt like I could work better under pressure. I still do But it might end up causing more stress and me messing up appointments or wasting precious time fixing something I did wrong in a hurry to get it done. Since I know it's a bad habit of mine, I add it into my morning prayer to ask for help in getting the grudging task done first thing whether I want to or not, so it can be done. It's a lesson I had to learn to use God to help me out because I'm just too weak to do it on my own. That's how we grow
Happy early Thanksgiving everyone!!! May God Bless you all!!!!
