Hi! I’m making a water catchment system for my plants and ducks this year since it rains a lot here I thought I’d take advantage. maybe it will lower my water bill for their kiddy pool. I’m wondering how or if I need to purify the water. I am putting a piece of window screen for the lid so there’s less contaminants and eggs. Should I put copper or bleach to purify the water?

Ozonation is a fairly quick and cheap way of some level of purification. A reed bed type natural filtration system is another option.

A biosand filter is also an interesting concept. A drip type contant flow filter. It's has been shown to reduce all kinds of heavy metals and pesticides. A compact derivative of a natural process. Lots of info out there. I've often thought how it might cope with a duck pond. Maybe they produce too much mess for it to be viable. But it's something.

If you have a pond or well water source nearby that would be the most preferred option, even if you have to dig a trench to bury the hose. They make heated garden hoses that would be easy to hide under the ground and safe from mowers. I thought of the idea of using rainwater but its just too much hassle since the water will also harbor bacteria and algae which probably aren't as safe to consume as bugs.
