Hello, I'm back with another question about some chicks that hatched this morning from my barred olive egger. Is this considered a dot that would belong to a male that comes from a barred hen? Dad is not barred.

That would be male yes, if ths mother is Barred, & the rooster isn't.

I don't know how genetics work, that is one thing that I will never be able to comprehend unfortunately, so sorry, I am unable to help you with that.

Update! Now they are 2 months old. I tried to get pictures of their feathers since I was told that's a way to tell at this age. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm undecided. Those combs are rather large and red for females of that age, but not as big & red as I might expect for males.

For the feather pictures, it's hard to see the shapes of the feathers on the white one (that is a common problem with white chickens.) On the darker one, I can't decide if I'm seeing male feathers starting to grow, or if I'm getting confused by the markings on the feathers and by the play of light & shadow on the chicken.

So I personally don't feel comfortable calling it one way or the other at this time.

Final update..... I put them in with the big chickens and roosters and the roosters are trying to get busy with both of them. I guess that settles it. They must be females!

They are definitely cockerels. Mounting is also a display of dominance

Half the people say definitely cockerals, the other half say definitely pullets. I guess I'll have to wait til they either start to crow, or lay an egg!

This is sex-specific male feathering. It's extremely obvious on the black bird but less so on the white. Their combs are also much, much too large and red to be pullets at their maturity. They are without a doubt cockerels and there shouldn't be debate-especially on the black one.

At two months with those big red combs…definitely cockerels.
