Silkie question

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

We raise and breed silkies. They are basically cared for like any other chicken; however, they are prone to vitamin deficiencies so I supplement good layer feed with rooster booster granules in their feed. That’s not necessary but I do it due to avoid possible problems down the road or with the chicks hatched from their eggs.

I also try break broody ones as before I started doing that my hens looked poorly.

We also heat their coop to 35-40F as we get brutally cold winters, plus, I don’t have to haul water.

I shave around their eyes about once every two months with my hubbies electric razor so they can see better. They like that. They free range so need to see the bugs and where they are going.

They can’t fly well if at all, so you’ll need to put their nest boxes lower or build ramps for them to get up. Ours prefer to sleep on top of the nest boxes so they all climb up the ramp at night. We tried perches as they never used them so took them out.

If you have any questions, just ask and I or others will help answer them.

You have beautiful silkies!
