Comb, wattles (even on bearded), streamers off back of head. Knowing your line makes it much easier.

Partridge is by far the easiest to sex because of the color difference between sexes. Some of them I can sex by 3-4 weeks because they are very obvious pullets. By 8 weeks I'll have 90% sexed. Sometimes I get cockerels that could be off color pullets because they have too much orange and are maturing slowly. Had a cockerel do that this spring. His color could have gone either way but his wattles and comb said cockerel. Color and size of those

Usually I can look even the few white or black cockerels I have in the face and tell around 8-12 weeks.
This makes me feel better that I’m not imagining things. The 4 that I’m sure of are white and black - the 6 I’m not are splash and paint.

Some of their combs look a bit big to me, but no wattles yet and their tails look girlie compared to my male partridges.

The waiting game continues!

Hello. My name is Linda and I am a brand new silkie addict. Thank you Everyone on this thread for feeding my addiction!

I’ve learned so much here already and it’s just the tip of the iceberg!

I’ve had BYM for years, just for eggs but now I want to try silkies so I bought some eggs off Ebay. Eight of the dozen were scrambled but I got these four out of it.

After reading a lot in this thread I see 2 are satin and 2 are silked(is that right?). The lady I bought them from didn’t mention they could be mixed. She said they were paints.

I have so many questions I hope y’all don’t mind.

Is there any way they all have the same parents? These babies are 13 days old.

Can a silkie and a satin make a silkie? Can the satin be completely bred out?

I’m gonna try not to ask too much all at once but I am curious about these babies. Any ideas y’all want to share with me? Thanks again!

Welcome! Ive been busy so just got on for the first time in about a week.

The normal feathers on a satin are from a dominant gene. Silkied feathers are recessive. So satin always shows if the bird carries it and is easy to breed out.

If the satin only has one copy of the normal feathers and is bred to a silkie, 1/4 of the offspring will be silkied feathered. Half will carry silkied feathered gene, but can't tell by looking. 1/4 will have two copies of the normal feathered gene.
