Then mine must just use the alarm sound. It's the same sound for my birds, when laying and when spooked

It's really hard to tell the difference. The only differences I have noticed is that the startled call sounds a lot quicker and and more panicked.

Definitely! I study my flock as much as I can with all of their behaviors, but especially their calls.
