Hello. Is this life threatening? There are a few issues with my rooster.
Beginning with the most urgent, apparently swelling around one eye on one side of his face is a respiratory infection sign. Pictures below. Currently the eye is nearly swollen closed.
I posted elsewhere and only got two unclear responses in a chicken group and it’s only gotten worse since then. I need possible diagnosis or recommendations for food, antibiotics or cures, special medicated food and anything else you can get at local feed stores. Thank you. I want him to be well and this could be serious.
I’m really thinking about taking him to the vet tomorrow or when I can get an appointment next. I live in Pierce County, Washington and would appreciate vet recommendations as well.
What should be my immediate course of action? Tomorrow I am separating him from his flock.
He also may have genetic issues. See the photo of his feet. Many of his body parts feel different than the other side, he certainly isn’t what you would describe as a normal rooster. I was told this could be because of the gene pool of the rare breed, being that they are often inbred due to smaller population numbers at fault of the hatcheries. I will post a link to a video of him walking, his legs are stiff making him walk differently. Thank you again, I care deeply about his well being.

Welcome to BYC

Do you have current photos of the swelling?
Any pus in the eyes or other symptoms like coughing, sneezing, mucous?

How old is he?

General care for eyes would be to flush with saline, press out any pus and apply an eye ointment like Terramycin. It would be good to know what illness you are dealing with. If disease like Mycoplasma, then an antibiotic like Tylosin can be used to treat symptoms. Do keep in mind that medication does not cure the illness and birds still remain carriers.
Tylosin can purchased online.

As for the leg, it looks like a leg bone deformity to me. Usually those can not be corrected and over time as the bird matures and gets heavier the leg may fail him.
IF your plans for him are breeding, then cull him. Imho, this bird should not be used for breeding.

Make sure he's eating well. An 18-20% protein feed like chick starter or all flock would be good. Give him 1/2 tablet of B-Complex twice a week.

Seeking vet care is of course a good option if your budget allows for it, hopefully they can give you more information.

:welcome:frowI agree with @Wyorp Rock. All of the options are the same that I would recommend. If you have a vet who will treat poultry that is a good option. Unfortunately where I live none treat poultry. Good luck...

Unless your veterinarian is a specialist in poultry diseases, I don’t think an “avian” vet will help you. They’ll just give a guess diagnosis based off of symptoms. I highly suggested getting your birds tested by a poultry disease specialist before a vet.
