Hi! I was wondering what you use and recommend using for chicken identification. I want to use some kind of plastic leg identification for sure.
So would you recommend using leg bands like these: http://www.eggcartons.com/Poultry-Leg-Bands-s/1886.htm
or bandettes like these: http://www.randallburkey.com/11-Bandettes-Box-of-25/productinfo/23030//#.U5-KnfldWt0
or even zip ties like these: https://www.strombergschickens.com/prod_detail_list/Numbered-Zip-Tie-Poultry-Bands

Also, when it comes to the zip ties, do you really need to buy special ones for chickens, or can you just use the ones from your local hardware store? I don't see the difference, but I want input.

Finally, do you have a specific place you like to order any of these identification methods from?

Thank You for your help in advance!

In for the replies. I recently posted a similar question because I can't tell my Orpingtons apart!

If I remember right the shipping cost at Randall Burkey was ridiculous. I purchased my #12 bandettes from Poultryman Supply where shipping is $7.

Fist time using them and the birds need to be a bit older before you start using them or they'll just fall off. I used loosely attached zip ties waiting for their legs to get bigger. See no problem with normal zip ties as long as you pay attention if it cinches up on them and only using for the 5 weeks or so until they can take a bandette.

Edited to correct shipping price.
