Hundreds of thousands of Victorians are set to escape their homes and descend on campgrounds, forests, beaches, and music festivals this Labour Day weekend.

The populations of some towns that usually sit in the hundreds will swell into the thousands.

But with the weather forecast to be hot, dry, and windy, emergency services are urging people to take precautions.

If you don't need to travel on Saturday, don't

Parts of Victoria, including the Mallee, Wimmera, and Northern Country, are predicted to reach the mid to high 30Cs on Thursday, and most parts of the state are forecast to reach almost 40C by Saturday.

David Rourke, deputy chief fire officer from Forest Fire Management Victoria, said that meant people should avoid travelling to state parks and forests.

"We are expecting elevated fire danger and we're asking people to really have a think about their plans for the weekend. If people don't need to visit our state forests and parks this weekend we would strongly advise them not to," he said.

"Come back and visit on another day when the fire risk is considerably lower."

Mr Rourke said if a fire did start on Saturday in grass or bushland, it's "unlikely that firefighters will be able to control the fire easily, so it's best if people stay away".
