When do duck produce the oil to help swim?

When do ducklings produce the oil to help swim? When can they go in deeper water instead of just wading around in it? Do they need their feathers first?

Watch them if under one month cause they can get tired and drown. And dry them off after so they aren’t cold since their feathers aren’t waterproof

Hello..Ducklings can swim after 2 days old. Water stimulates the oil gland to produce oil..
I start them off in shallow water and then deep water so they can dive around. Never leave them alone in deep water. They can drown if they tire out.

Thank you ours was always in their water and swam after a week and were fine just watch them dry them off and make sure they have dry spots with heat lamp
