Why are cocks/roosters a symbol of France?

From what I've read, the origin is somewhat contested; possibly it started as a non-complimentary pun about the historical Gauls and the Latin term for chicken, Gallus? Maybe instead because the Romans associated certain Gallic people with the god Mercury who was often portrayed with a rooster... But also, maybe because it was a very popular Christian symbol and was adopted later for that reason back when being a "Christian nation" was considered of high importance politically.

Obviously I can't tell you if any/all of this is true if actual historians can't, but I know I'm jealous. If a country represents themselves with such a brave and majestic animal I have to think they have extremely good taste. 😉
