That is a beautifully designed chicken coop, I really like the base and frame you built, definitely a sturdy coop. I was wondering if you weather proofed it with some wood glazing or anti-rust on the hinges? Here are 10 quick tips you can have a look at for reference when building a chicken coop. Great job on the coop and good luck with your chickens!
Thank you very much! I put a lot of thought into the design. I used pressure treated lumber, then primed and painted everything. As for the hinges, I believe I used stainless hinges. I even used corrosion resistant screws. I think this chicken coop will be around for a long time.
Thanks Rawr! I think you could fit as many as 5 chickens in this coop. I think the run is the limiting factor. You could fit more if you made the run a little bigger, or if you could be there to open the coop door every morning. The cut grass is great, but I don't put it in there every time I mow. Sometimes the grass grows quicker than the chickens can turn it into compost. When the grass is growing fast, I take the bag off and mulch it. Also, if I could change something about the design of my coop, I would make the roof overhang at the ends to block rain, because I'm not home to close that flap every time it rains.
They got up it with surprising ease. I was worried about that myself at first, but when they were young they could walk right up it, then jump up on the roosts. I put a box in the coop to help them get on the roost when they were really small. Now I can take the ramp out and they jump right up there.
Very cute coop! I love it! My coop also have a stair/ramp like this, and is no problem for my chickens, I love to see them going upstairs , specially the rooster because he is so big!!!
