Hi,

Log time follower, first time poster here…

I noticed one of the chickens limping and was ready to take care of the bumblefoot.. after soaking her feet I discovered something strange. Can I get help figuring out what to do with it?

It looks like there is a straight-through hole, which is filled with dirt, poop, and possibly rotting flesh.. looking at the top of the foot, there was a black calcified growth.

I cut off the black growth and cleaned up the hole as much as I could. Put some iodine on it and bandaged up the same way as after the bumblefoot removal.

I did not address the bumble foot because I couldn’t get to the entry point. It’s sideways inside the aforementioned hole in the foot.

Even though the chicken is clearly in distress, she eats well and just today she laid an egg.

Poor girl!

My guess is the bumblefoot is spreading and it can kill her if it's not stopped.

I'd get her on antibiotics if you can.

I'd continue soaking that in warm Epsom and using the undiluted iodine.

Here's a great article on bumblefoot.
