We started to string the bean towers. Ran out of string, so to be continued! However, I did plant some beans for drying in the part that was strung.
The bed planted last week has sprouted - peas, radish, cabbage, spinach, along with onion starts.
Large beds are prepped. Now to get the panels up for winter squash growth. The large beds will be the site of sweet potatoes, peppers, melons, tomatoes, squash (winter and summer) and cowpeas. But, most of these won’t be planted until after next weekend bc overnight temps drop to low 40s this weekend. Heat loving plants hate that!!
So, first batch of chicks are now 9 weeks old. They look great, and have integrated well. The second batch of chicks are 5 weeks old. They are looking very well too. But, we haven’t started to let them mingle just yet. Might leave them behind a fence another week. We have the third and last batch of a few chicks to pick up end of May. The majority of chicks are bought with 4H in mind. Kid shows “Fancy” chickens, and egg layers. Must be APA breeds, although (depending on judge) a “mixed” type, like EE can be used for egg layer category, but she’s been DQ’d at least once for using EE in the egglayer category. Doesn’t bother her, and she’s the 4H kid.
Baby goats: doing well! Tiny girl has caught up very well, and all are eating hay, minerals, and a little feed pretty well! Still nursing, of course bc they don’t get weaned until 8-10 weeks. We did band one male yesterday because we may keep him to be a buddy for the little girl. Little guy cried for 2 hours afterward, but he was in with his mom so he could be comforted by her presence. The other three boys are getting “buckier” by the day -silly boys-and they will begin to be separated from all girls by end of next week with only supervised feedings.
Out playing. The little girl is at bottom left, turning her head. The now banded one is on the top of the stand.
