Calling all Marans experts!

I have posted about this little dude before, but now at 7 weeks I’m still at a loss. What in the world is he?

I’m determined to figure it out once and for all!

History: purchased from Rural King (Hoovers hatchery ) from an “assorted marans “ bin.

Could it be a Noir Marans? (BCM x Cuckoo Marans mix). I think they’re sold under different names at different hatcheries.

I’m not an expert in anything, but it’s the only solid black Marans I’m familiar with.

Except if it is a Noir it has to be female because they’re sex linked, and that sure looks like a cockerel.

So like I said I’m an expert in nothing, and now I’m retracting my opinion.

It would be something if this red thang is a pullet yeah everyone says mmm or a bcm, but I wanna know which one.

Looks like a cockerel. So if that's the case, an MMM is sexlinked, (for instance, BCM roo x Barred Rock hen) so Males would be barred. Females would be black, some showing hints of copper in their hackles.

Edited to add... It's very hard to differentiate between MMM and BCM females until mating. MMM's won't breed true. I don't know much more than that as far as what progeny a MMM throws. Still new to this hybrid learning curve.

I guess I was thinking a BCM would have more copper/red showing through by 7 weeks, but I guess they’re all different.

My boy had a lot of red, but in hindsight I’m remembering his brother did not. So now I’m leaning BCM.

Hahaha demon chicken but heck I dunno. He looks bcm to me but because I know he’s hatchery quality, he might not be as colored up.
