Hi, my 1.5 month emu has a fractured leg, just wen to the vet, they put the ligament back in an sew it. Do anyone have any experience, with this kind of injure?
Thank for answers

Ligament was out, our vet put it in and stiched the wound, so he should be still for the next 2 weeks. But the vet thinks that the fluid went out... now he has something like a plaster on his foot, we have him in a smal box, but he does not wont to eat or drink...

Ok. Deep breath.

First, from my experience with young injured emus, thrashing about in panic is a real problem.

That is, Emoo either sits despondently, staring at the wall opposite his/her little straw-filled box, or you try to move her/him outside, to get sun and air and a view, and she/he thrashes about in panic. (It's heartrending to see it.)

Can you move Emoo without any risk?

Otherwise, we should assume that Emoo won't starve himself/herself to death, and that in a week or so, food and water will become interesting again.

One of the simple truths on BYC is that Emoo is alone, you are alone, the local vet is not an avian specialist, so situations feel absolutely as bad as they can possibly feel.

Give Emoo attention. Try to find some super treats to entice her/him -- maybe dried grapes or figs -- and let Nature take its course.

Thank you for the info. The jungster started to eat, first just greens, I gave him some yung spinich and denderlion, and then he started to eat the brikets also. And slowly drink water, he does not eat in his box, but only when I have him on mal lap ;) thank you for the tip about the treats, I am new in rasing emoos so any other adwise will be welcomed, as I have also 2 of them wich are in the general populations with other chick... an thay are somehowe started to get along.

About the injured one, I don't now how cen I help him not to develop "bedsores" as I am keepin him in smal box so he can not stend up, and how much food should he eat in one day, i gues he won't be able to stand on his own for another 14 days...

Nah. It won't be stationary long enough to develop bed sores.

And actually, emus are very very well designed for sitting. Think about the male, who sits 23 hours and 50 minutes a day for seven-and-a-half weeks while hatching his clutch. (On grown birds, though, you will find a 'bald patch' on their lower chest if you slide your hand down. I've always assumed it's from roosting at night.)

Spinach and dandelions and 'brikets' -- which I assume is dry food from the store -- is a good mix for an emu.

My project here -- 'Planet Rothschildi' -- exists because the house-clearing around my old farmhouse is a source of treats for emus: plums, figs, apricots, pears, grapes, lilly pillies. They never get junk food. It's a rule.

I mention this because it's taught me about 'treats'. Emus don't seem to like citrus. But otherwise, they'll scoff down absurd quantities of fresh and dried fruit.

And I wouldn't worry about Emoo overeating. We've never had a post about a fat emu. (But pet emus need, on average, far more exercise than they seem to get!!) It seems to be that they'll gobble up an amount. Then, when quite full, just stop.

Below is Felicity Emu scoffing Cape Weed flowers. Felicity luuurvs these, and use to come back from her travels every spring to enjoy them.

More importantly, perhaps, is that healthy treats are a way of giving her/him some attention while she/he is out of action. No one wants their emu injured, but time invested is the Nos. 1 aspect of taming emu chicks. Ultimately, the adult bird will be able to be handled for medical inspections and treatments. I can't do this for 'my' birds -- which aren't mine; they're wild -- and it's always been a problem.
