I have 12 week sick silkie, have narrowed it down to wry neck. I read to give it selenium but I am unsure on the dosage. I bought 100 mcg capsules. Can someone tell how much to give? I am also giving 400iu of Vitamin E and Poly-Vi-sol. anything else I need??

I think I found my answer, looks like 50 mcg once a day. Since I do not believe any head injury was involved, I am not doing the prednisone.

According to Alan Stanford on CROOKNECK http://dlhunicorn.conforums.com/index.cgi?board=casestudiesemergencies&action=display&num=1160927052

For the first week I give

Twice a day
2.5 mg of prednisone
400 IU of vitamin E

Once a day
A piece of human vitamin B complex pill or a squirt of human liquid vitamins
Selenium (50 micrograms/day for half size juvenile for 3 days)

For the second week I give

Once a day
2.5 mg of prednisone
400 IU of vitamin E
A piece of human vitamin B complex pill or a squirt of human liquid vitamins

Every other day
Selenium (50 micrograms/day for half size juvenile for 3 days)

For the following weeks I give

Once a day
2.5 mg of prednisone
400 IU of vitamin E
A piece of human vitamin B complex pill or a squirt of human liquid vitamins

Every third day
Selenium (50 micrograms/day for half size juvenile for 3 days)

Do not abruptly stop prednisone, the swelling rebounds, decrease dose
gradually.
Vitamin E recovery can be slow; continue the vitamin E for several weeks at
least.

You can get the prednisone from a vet; just describe the problem of
swelling in
the brain probably due to injury. Yes Silkies' brains do stick out through a
hole on the top of the skull.

You can get the vitamin E, selenium, and vitamin B complex or liquid
vitamins at
any pharmacy.

thanks for posting this! was needing the dosage- read in silkies a deficiency can show up with walking problems- within 12 hours he was showing improvement

Mine showed Improvement and I returned her to the flock in a week. She went right back down hill with the crooked neck in just a few days. I had to pull her back out for about five weeks. She is doing great now. I think I returned her way too soon. I followed Alan Stanford recommendations for the first two weeks (minus the prednisone),then we did scrambage eggs, yogurt and vitamin E every morning, and vitamin E in her water for three weeks.
