Anemia occurs when the blood doesn't have enough red blood cells, which are necessary to carry oxygen throughout the body. See causes of anemia below.
Symptoms of anemia include: pale comb, lethargy, weakness, weight loss, dull feathers. There may be other symptoms depending on how the anemia was caused (e.g. bloody or black stool from internal bleeding).
Treatments:
*The cause of Anemia must be determined and treated separately. The instructions below will tell you how to handle the Anemia itself.
1) Isolate the anemic chicken in a warm, dark spot with fresh water and food. The cause may be contagious if it's parasites.
2) Dose the chicken with Rooster Booster Liquid B12, Poultry Cell, OR NutriDrench, which have iron that should help raise red blood cell count.
3) Feed the chicken foods full of iron, B12, and folic acid. These foods may include red meat such as salmon and beef, and vegetables like spinach and sweet potatoes.
Note: too much iron is toxic, so determine the bird's weight and compare to the amount of iron needed (it depends on the breed, severity of anemia, and type of feed).
List of possible causes of anemia and their symptoms:
Treatments for these things range from dewormer to Poultry Protector Spray to antibiotics. Determine the cause of your chicken's anemia and treat it (there are other articles/sites explaining how to do this that can be found easily).
