There are two types of ducks:
The Mallard-derived breeds and the Muscovy.
It takes the Mallard-derived breeds 28 days to hatch, and it takes the Muscovy 35 days to hatch (one more week). But how do ducklings start hatching?
Here is how a duckling hatches:
The Internal Pip
The “internal pip” generally happens 1-2 days before the duckling will hatch. During this time, the duckling will start breathing with his lungs using the air cell.
The External Pip
The “external pip” is when the duckling makes its first crack. This happens about 24 hours after the internal pip, but sometimes even earlier. You won't be able to see any progress during this time. The egg will rock a bit, and you can even hear it's peeping. This step usually takes about 12-24 hours.
The duckling won't hatch now, because the duckling will be absorbing the egg yolk. And the egg yolk should be fully absorbed for it to hatch. The egg yolk is food that will provide him for a day or two of food.
Also, there is a network of blood vessels that surrounds the egg that is supposed to dry out for the duckling to hatch. If you were to help the duckling hatch at this stage, it would lose a lot of blood and die.
I know, it's very hard to wait during this time, especially during your first hatch.
The Zipping
The “zipping” occurs when the duckling has finished absorbing the egg yolk, and the blood vessels surrounding him have dried up. This is the step where the duckling is ready to hatch. The duckling will start making a crack around the wide end of the egg with its bill (or beak).
At this point, peeping can get quite loud but don't worry because loud peeping is a sign of a healthy duckling.
This part is very fast, and it usually takes 2 hours or so. You will get really excited at this part.
The Hatching
When the final crack around the egg is made, the duckling will push itself out of the egg. After the duckling hatches, it will be very tired, but don't worry because in several hours it will be fully energetic.
