There's nothing wrong with an outside-mounted nestbox as long as you make sure that it's completely waterproof (top-hinged lids are notorious for leaking), and that you use predator-proof latches. Outside-access boxes facilitate frequent egg-collection because you don't have to put on your coop boots and can just stop outside the coop on your way across the yard.
