Straw Itch Mite.

Had not seen this linked article before - another helpful addition! FYI, the tall grass in my upper yard bears itch mites starting in late spring/early summer which remain after grass is removed until winter frost. It causes ME problems, but have not noticed it being an issue for the chickens. I deliberately let it grow for the chickens to forage on the wild oats. I don't typically use the wild grass as bedding. It took me a long while to identify what was happening as the mites are microscopic. I end up doing yard work in these areas with a mixture of coconut and tea tree oil to discourage biting. Here are some additional links: "Is Your Hay Biting You?" the mysterious itch mite an organic spray treatment (never tried it)

I've had it handling livestock feed and bedding. The itching drove me bonkers!
Excellent article. I too, have found that straw isn't the best material for me to use with my animals. I much prefer using leaves, which, for me, never seem to have these mites on them.

This is well written article on a topic that is likely unfamiliar to many, and was to me. It concerns a kind of mite whose presence becomes a real problem only when there is a sitting hen; ordinarily it seems chickens can deal successfully with it. But for a sitting hen, it sounds very aggravating, and it is very useful to be enlightened here on the signs and symptoms to look out for.
Very informative read! I learned something new. Well written!
I learned something today. Thanks, Shad.

I was amazed to find out how may different types of mites there are.
Really informative.
My question is, how does it affect the chicks while they're still in the nest?

I haven't seen any evidence that the chicks were effected. This could be because in most cases once the mother hen leaves the nest with her chicks, I've cleaned out the nest and replaced the straw.
