Our flock started one day in October 2010, when I came home from work and my husband and daughter had bought 2 Buff Orpingtons and 2 Wyandottes.
We didn't even have a place for them to live! In the evening, they slept in this box.
During the day they played outside. Within a few days, we learned a valuable lesson about hawks and the benefits of hardware cloth. Only one chick was lost but we were shocked and hurt so we did replace her.
Before long, they had graduated to a dog crate in our garage and some free ranging during the day.
Charlotte was a "retired" chicken we saw at a local feed store. She was in need of a new home. We were so happy to introduce her to our flock. She was very comfortable during the few months we had her and brought us much joy.
