You did an excellent job with him! Thank you so much for sharing your story, it's been such a help to me. I have a Polish hen, Nora, who hid outside overnight in -8 degree weather with almost 3 feet of snow, and both her feet are frostbitten. I'm waiting for them to fall off and will get her...
I have English orpingtons. They go broody all summer. My lavenders are on their 2nd brood this summer and my chocolates are on their 3rd. You can have the 2 chocolates if you want. Seriously.
I'm surprised no one mentioned parasites as a cause for not laying eggs. I have tons of wild birds here and when my laying slows or I see bare butts, I treat them for mites. It works well, the laying increases after. It is a pain, since I have over 50 chickens ( I retire my old ladies to an old...
I have several sets of hens who choose to brood together and raise chicks together. This hasn't happened in the last 8 years I've been raising chickens. One pair hatches out the eggs and her partner takes the chicks. I don't separate broodies who brood together.
I have 5 banty english orpingtons who brooded together last year and raised the chick together. Then 4 of them went broody again and raised those chicks together. They are broody this year also in a group. Weird.
You should hear the one crow, lol. He sounds like an old squeaky door closing. At first I didn't know what the noise was, until I saw him trying so hard to crow.

Yes, I agree. I think she was looking for me to replace her frying pan too. I am going to drop her as a customer. I would rather give eggs away to people I like than deal with a problem person every week. She got free eggs last week too since she didn't see the post that I would be an hour late.
