Cochin

Cochins came from China in the 19th Century. They were recognized by the APA in 1874. They were...
Pros: Very friendly and social
Cons: Lower egg production
My bantam cochin Mouse is the highlight of my flock. She will follow me around and coo and cuddle when I pick her up. Their bug fluffy butts are absolutley adorable, I could watch her run around all day.

Great Breed
Pros: Very pretty
Nice Brown eggs
Super nice
Cons: Less eggs
Large bird; needs more food
I love cochins! They look super cute and are very sweet chickens. They seem like they are fat, but it's mostly just fluff.
I love the review, it's very well written!

Pros: Sweet, gentle, great pets, lap chickens
Cons: Fragile, few eggs, infertility, high maintenance, pushovers
We had a pair of the sweetest exhibition quality bantam Cochins. They were beloved pets, but our intention for breeding them was never realized since the pullet never laid any eggs. Not long after we got her, she died for no apparent reason. Romeo the male (one of my sweetest roosters ever, definitely a bit of a lap chicken) disappeared unexpectedly. This breed really doesn’t work in a free range situation unless you don’t care about getting their feet dirty. They are a higher maintenance chicken.

So sorry to hear of your loss. We have 4 Cochin hens (2 lavender, 1 buff, 1 white) all over 3 yrs old. One of my lavenders never laid well, she was bred for style over functionality but worth it! She’s super cuddly! Other 3 lay regularly, every other day. in hot weather they struggle- they’re more tolerant of cold climates. They’re not meant to free range, as they’re very trusting; not great at defending themselves. They like to be close to home, their flock/people. Our Cochins are pets and hop into laps whenever able. I love them; my children adore them. Buff variety gets broody often which can be pro or con, depending on your goals. Cochins make excellent mothers. My oldest show hen lived to be 11; laid eggs until age 6, only a few times/wk. We have a Polish roo who looks over them and their variety of sisters. We never let them all free range unless someone is with them- too many predators. Good luck to you if you try Cochins again! They are a beautiful, kind breed!
Pros: very docile, very friendly, make great pets, beautiful, and great personalities to name a few
Cons: dont lay like a production breed (this is a given, but i still do get 5-6 eggs a week from my hens) easily preyed upon
i breed mille fleur and calico bantam cochins and LOVE them! they are my all time favorite breed. their eggs are a decent size for bantams and they have amazing personalities!
if youd like to see some of my birds you can find me on facebook (Feathers and Foliage Farm)
Pros: Super nice and docile. Very fluffy too.
Cons: Not great egg layers and get bullied and picked on a lot.
Very good show bird, love them!
Pros: Friendly, easily handled, great for families, different colors and bantam size available. Easy to source
Cons: low egg production.
I absolutely love cochins! I have many bantam size, and even frizzles! They come in so many colors. Their personality is superb and I am always finding enjoyment from them. All of mine are curious and friendly. The roosters seem to tolerate other rooster very well and they are kind to my hens! Hugging those little fluffy butts are the best. I just wish they laid more eggs lol!
Pros: Gentle, intelligent, hardy, great pet for families, beautiful, cold weather tolerant, enjoys being a lap pet, lays eggs until ~6 yrs of age if well kept, gets along well with flock and other animals quite well!
Cons: Doesn’t tolerate extreme heat (over 85 degrees F) well, needs extra attention because they enjoy being held/talked to/petted (this is a pro for our family though). Don’t expect an egg every day
My all time favorite chicken breed! I hope to always keep Cochins! My oldest Buff Cochin hen, Gaby, lived 11 years and laid eggs every 2 or 3 days until she was 6 yrs old. She was cuddly, smart and sat on my lap to watch movies. She also was ‘potty trained’ and never pooped on a person, only on her Newspapers or pen. :)
Pros: Docile, Fluffy, soft and great for families with kids.
Cons: Higher chance of pasty butt throughout their life due to the double layer of feathers. Also prone matted feet feathers if kept in a run with a dirt floor.
We love, love , LOVE our Cochins. They are docile and dont mind a snuggle or 2. My youngest (6yo) loves them and wants more. They lay about every other day which is fine with us. Our white one lays a nice cream colored egg and the two black ones lay a light brown freckled egg. They are a hoot and its so funny to see them run away as they more so hop from side to side when they "run." Fluffy is an understatement and are SOOO soft! You wont be sorry with Cochins.

Pros: Very gentle and friendly
Cons: Easily caught by predators
I have had cochins for years. They are perfect for the owner who is very attentive to their back yard flock. They are very gentile and almost enjoy being handled. Beware! Everything wants to eat a chicken and these chickens are not good at escaping predation. I purchased mine as chicks from Murray McMurray hatcheries. Highly recommend.

Pros: They are awesome, they're friendly, they lay a lot, they are the best mothers, they are big and feathery!
Cons: Absolutely none, except their poops are big.
They really are just the best birds every! They are sweet, calm, good with kids touching and picking them up. Standard/LF Cochins from Hatcheries are aweful, like 1 out of 15 is ok in size and leg feathers, so we like breeding our own to get better birds. They lay lots of eggs. Ours are so big that hawks can't take them. They are good mommas and very protective. They like to free range, they can't fly, they really are just great!
Pros: Sweet personalities, very calm, excellent mothers, cold hardy, super fluffy everything
Cons: Don't handle the hot summer as well as other breeds, can take a long time to mature will start to lay eggs between 9 and 12 months
I LOVE our cochins!! Our rooster is HUGE but he is such a sweet boy! The girls are fantastic as well. They are probably the calmest breed we have in our flock. They are beautiful and so entertaining to watch! They are excellent layers once they start laying. The wait for them is completely worth it in my opinion. They tend to go broody and typically make fantastic mothers.

Pros: Affectionate, docile, charming. "A real gentleman" said his vet.
Cons: Not a single thing.
My Ollie, a Cochin Bantam rooster housepet, was a sweet, smart, affectionate, cuddly little fella. It's been six months since he passed, and it is too quiet around here. I'm ready to fill my house with that chuckling and chortling again. I'm just waiting now for the next hatchlings from Dog River Bantams. Two Cochin Bantam hens for our house!

Pros: Very friendly and sweet. does not wander far. beautiful feathering no matter what color
Cons: Can be very broody for long periods of time
I have one black Cochin bantam. You cannot ask for a more friendly breed.
They are a happy breed that will always bring a smile to your face when you see them running to you as their sight of them is a fluff ball without legs as you cannot see the legs under all those pretty feathers.
They are not skiddish and enjoy company either from a human or another chicken.

The only downfall I have found from this breed is they go very broody. They are determined to be mom.

They egg laying is 4-5 a week in the spring and summer from my Cochin. Small tan eggs.
Once broody no eggs have been laid as she takes my NH Reds Hen eggs.

Pros: Extremely friendly, docile, tame, calm, quiet, cute little brown eggs 3-4 per week, great for beginners and children.
I have 3 Cochin Bantam hens that I absolutely adore! There like little dogs lol Coco is 1, and when I come to the coop she literally flies up and perches on my shoulder and we will walk around the farm together. They are so docile and good natured. They are great with my toddlers as well. And they actually produce at least 3 eggs per week. All around great bird!
