The Easter Egger is not really a breed. They are relationed to the breeds Ameraucanas and Araucanas, then bred with many different breeds so they no longer fit either breed's standards. They usually have muffs and pea combs, but come in nearly every variety and color, some even have ear tufts or are rumpless. Each EE is different, but overall they are usually a smaller bird that lays pink, green, or blue eggs. They are normally friendly and calm, and their colorful eggs make them a popular choice in backyard flocks.

friendly and docile

Mercedes is a great hen. She is a bit skittish and flies out of the brooder, but she loves to be held. Can't wait to see her colorful eggs

Super friendly!
Pros: They love people, mine run up to me every time I walk in there
They're very cuddly, and mine really enjoy hugs
Cons: Rather loud if you don't give them attention right away
Mine tend to peck me if I don't pet them soon enough
Easter Eggers are one of the best "breeds" there are. I've had seven so far, and all of them have been super sweet. They're the first ones to greet me in the morning, and whenever I squat down, they run up to me for hugs. One of mine is blind, and she makes a LOT of noise if I go out there and don't say hi to her right away. Once I pick her up and snuggle her she quiets down instantly.

Amazing birds, five stars, would recommend!

I have some EE's and they are great chickens...very docile and even tempered. Studio2770..you are right, it is a seller's mistake. Since it is made so regularly, people that are breeding and showing Ameraucanas are probably on guard for those mistakes.

I call them a bird with identity crisis. I have 4 hens of this breed and they've been called all 3 versions. 3 of my 4 hens are laying and one started daily production at 22 weeks. Such cute blue eggs, they'll look funny next to the brown ones when my RIRs, Red Stars and Buffs start laying.

I have noticed my Easter Egger hens are *smarter* than my other breed hens and more, well, bird-like; they fly a little better, roost on tree-branches, etcetera. I have heard that the Aracauna is a breed much closer to a wild bird than breeds like, say, Buff Orps, which have been domesticated for umpteen years.

I love Amerucana's. I had a beautiful one. Unfortunately, She was killed by a neighbor's cat. I was so upset as she had the absolute best personality and always chattering especially when I came to see her. We got a new one and she is very skittish and runs if we come near her. Both laid green eggs.

I have Americaunas in central Texas with heat in the hundreds a lot. I keep a fan on in the spot where they like to lay in the shade and always water down that part of the yard and the trees overhead in the heat of the day, causing a swamp cooler affect for them. I also keep a metal pan (for draining the oil from my car) full of water for them to stand in to cool their feet. I hope this helps for next summer. : )

There are bantam EEs on Meyer Hatchery. They just come in straight run though.
Anyways, all the EEs I've have had been skittish. Although, I love their feather colors, egg colors, independant attitude, and foraging abilities. :)

I have several of these in my yard and live in Death Valley California all I do in the
summer when it gets over 120 F is keep the shallow concrete mixing tubs from
Home Depo full of water and at times through out the day I see them standing in
the water and have never lot one from heat predator's yes but never the heat now
the California White chickens can not or I have never had one make through a
single summer and these have a huge come to release the heat my ducks and
geese all stay in the shade along with the chickens and genie hens ............

You should be ashamed for calling them dumb! I am sure they could outsmart you any day!!!! People are dumb, chickens are smart! People like you only call them dumb because you eat them and you want to feel less bad about it. Also you are insecure so you have to seem smarter then other animals. You have offended me, so please go out to your chicken coop and tell all your chickens that they are smart!

I would also get more someday, as the 2 I have now 8 months old and laying, have just turned out wonderful, they are smart. Yours might have had lack of oxigen in shipment or something. AS mine do not run into the fence, and are some of the first to figure out things! Even before the older Orpington and Wyandotte.

Mine are interesting birds. All 4 were terrified of me when then were being raised, however, the one hen out of the group ended up being very sweet and one of my favorites. The 3 roosters are skiddish, but good roosters overall and take care of the hens. If you can catch one, they are real docile and don't panic. Mine are good flyers as well.

I love this breed, but I can't imagine ever doing a negative review on any breed.. If I didn't like a breed, i would never trash them. I like all breeds anyways! This breed is one of my favorites though!! I would also never call a chicken dumb! It's just mean! Chickens have actually proven to be one of the top 10 smartest animals, smarter then pigs! :)
