Commercial solar is a huge topic of contention in my township. The township is rural, there is a lot of farmland. A company wants to put in commercial solar fields, leasing property from the farmers who wish to lease.
Does anyone here live next to/near a solar farm? What are your opinions on...
I posted this information in another thread, but wanted to post it on its own. I'm dealing with salpingitis in a pullet, and was hoping to find a source of amoxicillin online to order more. Sadly, I think a prescription is required now.
The lable on this bottle looks like the stuff I bought...
Today I saw Pip, one of my 9 month old pullets, in the classic "I don't feel good" stance: head hunched, tail down, off in a corner. I checked her bum and saw what looked like egg whites mixed with poop on her feathers. I brought her inside and cleaned her off. There was something sticking out...
One of the local meteorologists said on last night's weather forecast that this winter was shaping up very much like the winter of 1982. Unseasonably warm December, very warm around Christmas Day. Not much snow, either. Highs for the 24th-26th are forecast to be for 50-53 degrees. As in 1982...
If anyone is interested in seeing what happens at a practice burn for the local FD, I wrote about it here.

WARNING!!! It contains pictures of a fully involved house fire. They may be disturbing to look at...
My PFM expires in a week, so I thought I'd buy another 1 year membership. I can't get it to show up in my cart in the store, nor can I do it through account upgrades on my profile.
Nope, it's not the usual "They're impossible to peel!" problem. They peel better than any hard boiled eggs I've made in a pot of boiling water. The problem is, most of the shells crack. This last batch was 7 out of 10.
I've been cooking them in my Instant Pot. 5 minutes pressure, 5 minutes...
I found two of these inside the chicken run.
If they were outside, I'd spray them with Raid wasp/hornet killer. (And then skedaddle.) The bugs fall to the ground, twitch, and die. Sorry bugs, my house/shed/greenhouse, my rules. You're not welcome. You've stung me before.
I don't want the...
I want to give a positive review of my experience with Mt. Healthy.
I ordered chicks back in January, and had a nice chat with Kelley on the phone when I did. I told her what I wanted (3 Bielefelder and 1 Blue Australorp pullets) and when I needed them shipped (May 14). She listened to me...
I thought I'd have plenty of time to have a blog when I retired. HA! Three years in, and like a lot of retired people, I have so much to do, I wonder how I ever had time for a job.
So I think I'll start a thread here.
GF #1 is Garden Fresh. Nothing better than fresh fruit and vegetables from...
I got an email from TSC about the changes coming, ie, antibiotics that will soon require a vet's prescription to purchase. Since not very many vets see chickens, a prescription might be hard to get. Is it a good idea to buy some/all of these to have on hand? Here's a list of names that I...
I have 3 Black Australorps who are soon to be 3 yo, and 3 other hens that are about 1.5 yo. The top hen of the elders, named Little, has it in for the bottom hen of the youngers, named May. This started about a month ago.
It was just pecking for a bit, then got better. Now it's way worse...
When I was in grade school, we sang a song about Michigan. Here are the lyrics that I can recall:
Since 1837, when we became a state,
A very exciting story to you we can relate.
About a proud land, and a proud people,
And so we say to the USA:
We're not as large as Texas, but we do have land...
I found this on the poop board at clean up time today, so it was probably laid last night.
I'm pretty sure I know who laid it.
I cut it open. It's mostly empty, like a soft shelled egg, but the left end had some goo in it.
Another picture. I cut off the left end; it's the triangular piece on...
I'm not hatching any eggs, but if I were, I'd want to double check the accuracy of the thermometer in the incubator. How do I check it with another thermometer, of unknown accuracy?
I just did a boiling water test with 3 thermometers. One is a candy thermometer, and is only as accurate as the...
This is May.
She was hatched last June, and I got her from a breeder. She was sold as a Blue Australorp, but when she was about 4 months old, I realized the bottoms of her feet were yellow. (Don't know how I didn't see that before. 🤦♀️ ) Therefore, not an Australorp.
I figured she was a...
I've had an issue with the eggs that my Black Australorps lay. The yolk nearly always breaks when I crack open the egg. I thought it might be food related, but it doesn't seem to be. I feed Kalmbach organic starter/grower (20% protein), and very few treats that are not their food wetted into a...
My roo, Darl, was really after my feet yesterday. It was a cold and windy day, so I had my hood up.
Today, it's not as cold, a light breeze. I left my hood down, and he acted like I was "The giant who brings food," which is to say, interested, but ignoring me.
Thinking back on the last couple...
I have 3 12-week old pullets that I need to integrate into my existing flock of 3 hens and a rooster. They have been in a look-don't-touch coop and run for about 5 weeks now. I have some worries about my upcoming integration. Here's the pertinent info:
The bottom hen of my existing flock, Lark...
