Samuel flogging me got him on my 💩 list, and forcing himself on a broody hen put him on the "your days are numbered" list, but it took him attempting to kill chicks to push me into culling him on the spot...but it wasn't easy, and I cried.
I understand your position. Personally I don't like the idea of drowning animals. I worked in a restaurant that developed a mouse problem. Instead of dropping it in a bucket of water as directed I put on a glove to hold a mouse that was caught alive, and I hit it on the head with a hammer. It...
There's a low cost spay clinic in our town. I trap feral cats and the clinic neuters them for a nominal price. They recently closed because they cannot find a vet to do surgeries. While speaking to a volunteer about the situation she explained that local vets used to donate their time to do...
I had an interesting development with my flock. Rahab has been taking her four chicks up on the roost, for 3-4 days. The other broody, Tamar, is still sleeping with her two chicks in a nest box.
Last night I checked after dark, everyone was in their place up on the roost, even Hannah who has...
What a good broody! My Martha stayed an extra three days and successfully handled a staggered hatch. She can hatch again next year if she's so inclined.
On a similar note:
Somehow Rahab wound up with Tamar's chicks as well as her own! I liked how she didn't go after them.
Everyone is back with the correct momma this evening.
They also have an abysmal adoption rate for their shelters. A few years ago PETA workers were caught on camera going onto someone's porch and stealing their dog, which they then euthanized. I wouldn't give them the time of day.

Zacchaeus, aka Zack, is growing up!
I'm looking to add the next generation of pullets, to keep the flock going, and eggs coming.
The current hens are keeping my lone cockerel in check, reminding him of his place, though he's only 8 weeks old. I might keep a second cockerel from the latest hatch, as long as they can get along...
My original ten were 7/3.
Then I got 5 boys from 5 eggs with the April hatch.
It's looking like 3 of each from the latest hatch, hope so. You can check out today's pictures here:
