12 Bantam Barred Plymouth Rock hatching eggs

I have 12 fresh eggs from my Bantam Barred Rocks up for sale. These are beautiful, friendly little birds that lay well. The parents are Horstman line birds from chicks I bought last Spring. Fertility has been great here and I have a brooder full of chicks. I have had pretty consistent wins at...

Hen keeps neck bent, keeps swallowing hard

I have a Modern Game Bantam hen that will not eat or drink on her own. Her neck seems bent and she makes a swallowing motion sometimes over and over. I have been giving her vitamin water with a dropper yesterday and today. I don't see any improvement. I can't get her to eat. Anyone have any...

My "Experiment" eggs are due Wednesday! UPDATE: PICS!

I've been having a lot of trouble with chicks dying at day 18 or 19, or pipping and then never hatching. Some people suggested that it was humidity problems and I have heard of "dry" incubation, so I thought I would experiment. I set some EE eggs 18 days ago in my Hovabator. I haven't added any...

Lost a favorite hen, questions about the cause of death

I had a hen die last night. She was my son's favorite that he used for showmanship. She was doing great at Crossroads back in October. After we got home I put her in a pen with some others. I noticed after awhile that she seemed to be hiding out every time I came to check on them. So, I removed...

No wonder the Standard of Perfection is open to interpretation!

I was reading the standard for Silkies this morning and I'm laughing my head off. One of the Defects for Silkies is, and I quote, "Overall appearance of being a Creeper." What does that mean? If you have kids who play Minecraft, you might have an idea, but I'm sure that's not what they meant...

    "Araucana" eggs on Chopped

Has anyone else seen the $50,000 episode of Chopped where the contestants have to cook with "Araucana" eggs? The show never does explain what Araucanas are, even though the contestants mutter to themselves, "What kind of eggs are these?" Then, when they show the eggs, there are green, blue, and...

    Antique Ceramic Rooster Cookie Jar

I bought this unique looking Cookie Jar in Kentucky a few years ago. I don't know how old he is, but I've never seen another one like it at a flea market again. He does have a bit of damage to his comb. The cracks in the photo are cracks in the glaze, not the ceramic.

13 year old DS diagnosed with Pectus Excavatum.

We noticed last summer that my son's chest had a depression in the center that was causing him to worry about his appearance. At the time, I thought it might go away as he got older. However, when I took him for a physical for track this year, I asked his doctor about it. She said that it was a...

Whew! What a day at the Poultry Show!!

I had almost given up ever winning anything at a poultry show. It just seemed impossible. Well, today was the day it all payed off. My Barred Rock Bantam cockerel won Champion Single Comb Clean Legged. I thought that was enough excitement, but he went on to win Champion Open Bantam AND Grand...

Taming chicks - This works great!

I have seen a lot of posts saying, "My chicks hate me!" and such. Here is what I have done this year with my chicks that has worked wonders: Some folks use the soft dog food "kibble" to feed their showbirds, so I decided to start giving it to my chicks to train them for shows. The first day...

Shipped eggs - out of 8 only one made it to lockdown - why?

I got a batch of eggs from someone in California. I was so happy when 8 out of 10 began to develop, especially since a lot of them had detached air cells after the long trip here. Well, when I put them in lockdown, only 1 was still alive! Even this one has a huge air cell. Other eggs from my own...
