I use straw in our 26' x 10' run with my 5 poop machines (Muscovys) and no smell, even by the kiddie pool which I change once a day, though I have to refill several times a day.
I spread clean straw around the heavily traveled areas every couple of days or so and they keep it well compacted...
In the brooder (5' x 5'), I use a mix of pine shavings and the pellets. I had 8 muscovy poop machines in there and all I had to do was scoop out the worse parts and fluff the rest. Did heavy cleanings twice a week and worked well.
In the coop, just pine shavings turned over daily, deep litter...
My muscovy's did that around that age too. It went on for about a week, I think they just need to get their wings stronger as their feathers are filling out.
Hi everyone,
I'm looking for a place to get some of my muscovy ducks processed in the RI area as Spring has sprung, as far as the drakes are concerned, and I have too many drakes, so off to Camp Maytag they go.
Any suggestions? Thanks!
Mike
Every morning, when I let my ducks out for the day, I like to observe how the interact with one another.
This morning after I let them out and they did their usual running around, flapping wings, happy dance, two of the females started doing the following: first they stretched their heads up...
Well, after much observation, I think I've discovered why my drake is doing what he's doing. I was watching my flock this morning after letting them out and setting out their food and water, etc.
It would seem that all the males' "equipment" would randomly pop out and then go back in, well the...
For the second night in a row after putting my Muscovy ducks in their coop for the night, I observed one of the drakes acting like something was stuck to his butt. He stretches his head towards his vent area and snaps at open air then stretches his head on his other side and does the same thing...
Here is what we have done so far, still a ways to go. They only get supervised outside time until I finish enclosing the run.
There will be another dutch door on the other side...
Just to give you a sense of scale of the inside...
Finally made a door for the ducks...
Thanks!
For the floor I'd like to use a linoleum remnant, that would make cleaning much easier. The inside should stay pretty clean though as I'm going to keep their food and water outside in the pen.
Finally got started on a coop and run for our Scovies today. Made great use of leftover materials for the interior walls as well as the exterior.
More tomorrow!
My 8 'Scovies are almost 5 weeks old and since introducing them to fun snacks such as peas, they nibble at my fingers while I'm changing their water, food, etc. Well that nibbling is getting more aggressive, nothing painful but I'm curious if this will get worse as they get older.
Any...
Isn't that the truth!
They way these guys go crazy for them is hilarious, I can't even clean out their brooder or change out their food and water without being nibbled to death by them looking for more!
Brought our 'Scovies outside for the first time today. Set them up in a temporary pen with the help of some peas to get them out of their brooder!
Needless to say more peas were required to put them back into their brooder. Hope to have their coop and run built next weekend as...
Hi everyone,
I have 8 Muscovy babies that are around 9 days old, they are all doing well in my new brooder and I was wondering when I should give them water deep enough for them to dunk their heads and clean with?
Thanks!
