I’m treating a fly strike on a rescue I just picked up. I’ve gotten all the maggots out, cleaned and dressed the wound. Have her on antibiotics. But I know it must hurt. And I have melox from my vet for both my dog and my cat. And I thought that may help her.
This is not a super severe wound when it comes to fly strike. They can eat all the way into the abdominal cavity. She doesn’t need to be put down. Just repeatedly cleaned soaked and have ointment on her.
You can order antibiotics online very easy. From pigeon and falconry sites. Even have...
How’s she doing? When dealing with this I soak them in epsom salt warm water and use tweezers to get out all the maggots you can. Spray the wound with clorahexadine or veterycin, than pack with neosporin. I ALWAYS give antibiotics when this happens. As it can cause nasty and fatal infections...
I have antibiotics on hand. I would have just done them to be safe but she has dealing with severe sour crop for so long, I fear it would complicate things.
But I just changed her bandage. No redness or swelling. Stitches holding firm. Starting to see signs of healing. And she is crazy...
She is doing amazing so far. Energetic, she has an appetite, she os mad about the sock and the bandage, and keeps biting me 🥰 all good signs. I just gave her liquid nutrition, she is pooping normally, and quite vocal as usual.
She is really skinny from starving almost to death, and then getting this crop issue. Do you think a tiny amount of powdered bird nutrition for tube feeding in the water would be ok, so that’s still watery but has a few calories in it? Or I should I wait the 36hrs for any nutrition at all...
I did. I ordered surgical scalpels but they were not quality apparently. I raced to tractor supply got a castration kit, and used the blade in that. It was much easier. This is what I removed, and this is her now, mad that she has a sock on over her dressings.
I tried. I hit through the first layer of skin, but can’t cut the crop. I had to bandage her and come try and figure something out. Why can’t I get through the crop?
I’m prepared to do it. I was just needing some advice about the stitches. And how people knotted them. I’ve read so many accounts of people doing it successfully, but having the wounds continuously open when using glue. So I got medical grade sutures that are dissolving for the crop itself...
I’ve called 80 different vets within 300 miles of me. The one that said their office could do it, the doctor who deals with chickens won’t be back from vacation till February. Even with me draining the fluid out of her crop, and treating with medistatin, the crap in there is causing the sour...
Ok. Is there lots of yellow runny discharge on her vent feathers? Is her abdomen swollen at all? If so is it hard or soft?
Yellow droppings, with the described symptoms lean more towards bacterial infection than coccidiosis.
Did you notice if she seemed excessively thirsty at any point?
I have a hen I rescued. She was the sole survivor after being locked in a coop when the owners moved and left them behind. She was almost dead when she got to me. I didn’t think she would make it. I did tube refeeding, and she perked up, and started getting stronger. Poor thing is skin and...
