I love sand. Also made a strainer. Cut opening on bottom of a bucket. Lined it with hardware cloth. I shovel sand/poop in and it sifts the sand back on the floor. Then dump poop in bucket and pile it in a compost bin. I call the mixture CSS (Chicken **** and Sand) my neighbors love it and put...
In vet school they have to do rounds on all animals. Then choose specialty. That is what makes being a vet so difficult, they are literally tested on information for all animals! God bless them! I did call around myself and found one 45 minutes away. My husband was not thrilled that I a spending...
I have a dog cage that I use to keep my sick ones separate. Can you isolate her that way? I recently had one that got an injury, I cleaned her up and all seemed fine. Took her to join. I went in for a while came out and the literally pecked her to death. Meanies! So now I have a sick chicken...
any update Jane38? I hope your girl is better. Mine is still not well. Her back end is really swollen and she is now sensitive to the touch. I have been providing hot baths etc. and water with electrolytes and duramycin. no improvement. I wish I had a magic wand!
thanks for the info. I will take the water away that has the duramycin but leave in the electrolyte water. I will also soak her and see if I feel anything. As I said she is eating and pooping fine. Wouldn't she stop pooping too?
I got mine at Farm and Fleet. I am sure TSC has it as well. We do not have a vet who takes care of poultry near by that I know of.....BYC is my poultry vet
I am thinking I have the same problem but she doesn't feel eggbound. Eating drinking pooping fine but tail down. Waddling like a penguin. I have given her electrolytes and antibiotics (duramycin-10 in her water.) hope she drinks it!
My Rhode Island is tail down. But eating, drinking and pooping. Crop not impacted. Back end feels fine. ugh. Put electrolytes in her water and now working out dosage of Duramycin - 10. I hate figuring out dosages. For goodness sakes I don't need a gallon a day!
Does anyone have an idea what...
I use sand in my coop for my layers. I love it....I made a scooper that filters the sand through a wire netting. Kind of a large cat litter scooper on a stick. Anyway great idea for the babies. Will do that today! I don't know why I didn't think of that duh.
I got new chicks last Monday from McMurray. I am furious. One dead in box..ok that happens. but over the next 4 days I lost 8! Half my order I have raised many new chicks and I have never lost them and now lost half of them. I emailed but have yet to hear back from mcMurrray. They had food...
I am in SE Wisconsin. Thinking winter time...I use heat lamps on very cold days. Does anyone see a problem with the sand during winter with this set up?
I had a similary situation but she enjoyed the bath and eventually dropped a yoke a day then a soft egg. Now nothing for a week but she is eating, drinking and active , gaining weight too So I haven't been concerned over the lack of eggs.
Sad that she is still suffering. Maybe since she pooped...
I had a sick hen and used 1/8th tsp of durmyacin 10 in a cup of water. I got it from tractor supply. Maybe the same dosage in water will work as the chick won't drink as much water as a hen. It sure worked for my sweet girl!
