Hello. One of my mini hens went missing a couple of weeks ago. I thought she had been gotten by a hawk. This morning, she showed up in the barn. At the same time I saw her, I heard newly-hatched chicks peeping! I searched around and discovered that she had been setting on eggs in the soffit of...
I took a closer look, and strangely, the feathers are not pulled out. They look like they are cut off about 1/2" out from the skin. Very nice, even, blunt ends. I put a saddle on him that will cover part of the area. Would this be from the hen or from himself? I did not notice anything like this...
My Ameracauna rooster has lost an area of feathering in front of his tail feathers. The tail feathers are fine, and most of his body is fine. This area looks o.k., the skin it not bare - there is down there. Is this moulting or is the hen picking on him, or could it be something that should be...
You have some beautiful animals! I need to make a saddle for my hen. Can you tell me about how big the fleecy saddle that you made (above) is? I am not great at estimating size - I will be off by a huge margin if I try.... ;-)
Thanks!
Does anyone else have an opinion? Is there a page somewhere with pictures of chicks by breed? I find pages of adults, but have not seen a page for chicks.
I read through a bunch of posts in this section, and I think the two with a lot of white might be Australorps, which would be great! I have had Australorps before and really liked their temperament. Wondering if the ones with the stars on their heads might be Barred Rocks?
their legs are light colored (yellow-ish), so are their combs, what little combs they have. At least the darker ones seem to have yellow-ish combs.
the video is still uploading on YouTube. It takes a while with my rural internet connection. ;-)
(even longer since I didn't post the link! Here...
Spring is in the air, and Tractor supply has chicks for sale. This is my 3rd year with chickens. I picked up a dozen chicks at TS a week ago and am not sure what they are. Hoped you might be able to help. There are two different types. The first type is almost solid black and all had a white...
Thanks so much. I left him in the crate overnight, and this morning I let him out with the others. He seems to get along fine, and stayed with them all day. I have to go check at dusk and make sure he is roosting in a safe place. If so, I think I am pretty happy with this addition of a pretty...
I was hoping that with all of the post-Easter roosters that are bound to be out there, that people might have done this (re settled a rooster). Is there a list of basic information articles somewhere that I can check?
Thanks
I put this young guy in a dog crate in the barn. The other chickens will roost near where he is. They come and go freely during the day from the barn, and roost in the barn. The chickens all stay inside the area during the day. It is a fenced turn-out that is a couple of acres. They don't leave...
My pet rooster got killed a couple of weeks ago. He climbed into the dog yard. Anyway, I miss having a rooster around, so I checked on Craigslist and found a few roosters. I thought I would because a lot of those cute "Easter chicks" are turning into roosters now ;-) I found a lovely little...
Hello. I started with chickens last year, and am really enjoying them. My chickens made it through the winter, and now we now have some new chicks to add to the flock for this year. I built a 4'x8'x4' coop that has worked well for this winter, but it needs to be moved as I am going to be having...
Thanks everybody for the warm welcome. I picked up new chicks on Weds. Three Australorps, three black sex-links, and six guineas. So if all of the chickens survive, I will have 8 laying hens, and the guineas are more for fun than for anything else.
