I also like the hot wire netting. The coyote was successfull last year at convincing the hens to fly out, then she picked a couple off. Now we only do it while we are home. I like it bc I can move it and navigate them away from my garden! Crossing fingers but we haven't had a hawk problem but...

I used an old greenhouse frame for my tractor with chicken wire wrapped thoroughly around and underneath. It was intended to grow out my babies until they were big enough to incorporate with the big girls. It was wrapped, pinned and ziplock tied at any corner but he chewed at a corner enough to...

Ugh, just lost all but one chick to a fox this morning. He or she found a weak link in my chicken tractor after 4 weeks! ****. All I have is a wounded roo. Anyone know of any swaps that will have older pullets? Can't trust my tractor so they'll have to incorporate into my pen inside a pen system...

Woohoo! Day 19 yesterday and already had several eggs zipping and chirping! This morning their holes were bigger and still chirping. Out of 14 delivered eggs, 12 were still developing last weekend so hoping to get a good hatch. Having real troubles with keeping my humidity high though. Hope...

Duck People! Have a friend in the Bangor area looking to give a home to an adult duck to keep her existing duck company. She lost one this winter and her last one is very lonely and doesn't get the comfort from the chickens she was hoping for. Anyone have any adults they want to rehome...

Ÿes, it'll be my main structure. Hoping to drill holes and use larger screws. Haven't quite figured what I'm going to do for a door, or windows yet, but I can frame in the windows afterwards. Hoping to find lightweight cheap siding. Have an old metal roof that will the roof, at a salt box style...

I'm enxcited to try my very own project (husband less) for a pallet coop. We have a small scrap wood coop we made for six birds but it's so addicting, and I enjoy variety so now at 14 birds (4 rescued free rangers) I need a bigger coop! I've found some great ideas on line, but has anyone done...

Could be parasites. Coccidiosis or rounds. Especially with the stress of changing homes. I'd consider a round of both treatments be fore he's in with the rest. Panacur for roundworms and corid for coccidiosis. There are dosing suggestions in a thread.

Pretty excited! Getting my first batch of fertilized eggs, americaunas! My last batch was mostly roosters. Hoping to get better odds. For the newcomer, I have loved my orphingtons, Cochins and went back to my sex links. I learned hand raised chicks were friendlier than hen raised chicks. I've...

I am in Southern Maine and looking for some laying hens to purchase for the winter. Any older birds that are friendly are welcome, not breed specific at this time. I just know my cochin will go broody soon and I won't have any eggs! I didn't have good luck with this years hatch, 4 of 5 are...

Hey all Mainers: Earlier this summer I purchased two adorable bantam cochin babies from the TSC Sanford swap. They are about 3 months old now and I am positive one is a roo. The man I had purchased him from was younger and had a boat load of birds and I never did get his info! He mentioned...

I would also keep your eye out for chicken swaps or farm days near bangor. Even ask around at a farmers market. We ended up getting just the right age to mingle with our girls by going ot a chicken swap at TSC so we wouldn't have to re raise a bunch of day olders. We lost half our chick...

Anyone know the laws of shooting vermin in your yard? We found a skunk wandering the yard off and on throughout the day!! When it got close to the chicken pen and the dogs weren't scaring it away we shot it. I am wondering about testing for rabies? But don't want to get in trouble for firing a...

Quote: Welcome dlynn, I would definitely use that have a heart trap on your coon. But when you catch him, DROWN him, or otherwise dispatch him. Coons are horrible to chickens. They put their hands through fences and drag them right out. Sadly, where there is one, there are often many more. I...

I am in Kennebunk Maine and this is a very new hobby for me. We purchased some Sex-Linked chicks two months ago and lost 3 of our first 6 to unexpected wildlife. We have since spiffed up the coop, and gotten an actual clasp lock. (the animal unhooked our hooks) We had a hard time finding some...
