    Wrath's Marans

I know this wasn’t directed at me but I’ll share my experience. My F1 OEs all had obvious Marans faults from hatch. It might be blue feathers, green or yellow legs, pea comb, or beards but there was always something of if I looked for it. Some of my back crosses this year are starting to look a...

    Wrath's Marans

There was some discussion about incubating small eggs and I mentioned my Marans have never laid above small size. Then overweight hens was suggested as one possible reason for poor laying

I managed to grab Penny out of a nest box this afternoon. She is the one that lays 2-3 small eggs a week. Her is about 5 1/2 pounds. The scale was bouncing around because she wouldn’t stand still LOL. She feels OK to me but I’m not an expert. I can definitely feel her keel bone when I hold her...

    Wrath's Marans

It’s been a while since I have really put my hands on either one. They don’t look overweight to me but I know feathers can hide a lot. They do get free access to food 24 hours a day. I feed Kalmbach flock maker 20% protein oyster shells on the side, and some kitchen scraps(mostly vegetables). I...

    Wrath's Marans

The color is good but 44 grams is not anywhere near breed standard. She was hatched June of 2023 so she is 1 year and 9 months old. She should be in her prime but she has never really produced well.

    Wrath's Marans

I need to get better Marans I have 2 that are almost 2 years old the best layer (Penny) gives me 2-3 eggs a week that are pullet sized. The outer one(Betty) very rarely lays at all she might give 2 eggs one week then nothing for 2 weeks before laying another one. Her eggs aren’t even very dark.

    Wrath's Marans

I have never heard a specific number of grams or ounces just when it is in the normal size range for the breed. One issue I have heard with breeding from pullets is you don’t have any information on the long term health of the bird your breeding. Like if you only hatch from pullets then a...

    Wrath's Marans

Congrats on the new chicks. I have noticed the temperature on my govee drops at hatch. I’m not sure if it’s because they move it around, the cooling effects of evaporation as all the chicks dry off, or a combination of the two. I’ve never really worried about it their next stop is a 95 degree...

Ok that makes sense. Sometimes when people are on the other side of the pond they don’t understand local idioms. But I was like he’s in Lower Michigan, he’s not even the other side of Lake Michigan.

There is an AI generated picture thread on this forum somewhere that I read a while ago. Once in a while I like to kill time typing random phrases into the generator.
