Hello! we are brand new to chicken raising... our first girl: a leghorn started laying a few weeks ago, right around 16 weeks old. at first she’d lay every couple of days then she went about four or five days of laying, now it’s been more than a week since she’s layed. (It has been about 90...

Type of hens? Sex-Links, RIRs? Other?

Hi Everyone, New to backyard chickens. This website has been a gold mine of information. Thanks to all for taking the time to offer your thoughts. I recently picked up these pullets from the farm down the road. I am having a hard time identifying them, the farmer wasn't even certain. Amy...

    Squishy egg within egg

I found this while looking for my evening eggs about 15 min ago. Each layer revealed a new egg-thing. I hang out with my flock multiple times a day and no egg is left in there over an hour. The one who laid this is one of the leghorn cross "Ideal" hens. She is almost 3 years old. She eats Layena...

About 3 week old leghorn sexing

These little “girls” are about 3 weeks old. They’re supposed to be leghorns. They are getting pretty long tail feathers. Is that a sign they might be roosters? I know I’ll probably have to wait longer, but I JUST CANT! 😂🤣😂 Thanks!

    Leghorns pullet or roo

I do this every time I get new chicks! Stress for months until I know the sex! I think it’s because my first set of “pullets” I got at rural king were actually 50/50 hens and Roos! Leghorns seem a more tricky to sex by features. Any ideas if these are pullets or Roos?

Why has my Leghorn stopped laying?

My 1yr old Leghorn started laying eggs last August-ish. Then once daylight started getting shorter in December, she & my other girls stopped laying. Well, here it is April and everyone has returned to normal laying schedule except her! She is my smallest hen, could that have anything to do with...

    Novogen

Do you have a novogen? I was curious if you could post pictures. I just got one and it’s between 8-10 weeks old. It looks like a pullet but it has pointy tail feathers. I’m curious what your pullets and Roos look like. If you have any thoughts on mine please help lol.

help me identify the breeds and genders of my chicks

These chicks were sold to us sexed as pullets. The yellow one was supposed to be a cream leg bar, however, I think it's more like a leghorn. any thoughts? the brownish one I believe is a barnevelder. This is not their normal set up, I was taking two at a time out on this towel with some food and...

Earthen Acres Homestead: First mixed laying flock

Hey everyone. My partner and I have a fairly new 5 acre homestead in New England and have recently added 10 birds, 9 pullets and a cockerel, to our growing self sufficiency. I am already completely smitten with them, and people in real life are tired of hearing about them! lol Figured I'd share...

choosing/optimizing mixed flock for egg laying

We have had 7 BR hens (and one roo) we bought as chicks in spring 2018 and by end of winter-spring 2019 they sucked at egg laying - going broody repeatedly with 2 week interval, pecking feathers (despite protein supplement), and just being big frame fat chickens upon butchering. Their...

    Chicken who lays very infrequently

I have a white leghorn chicken in my flock of 5 (barred rock, Rhode island red, Easter Egger, Americana). They were all born on March 2 & 3 of last year so are not quite a year old. My white leghorn was the first to lay at about 14 or 15 weeks. She laid an egg a day and pretty much never took a...
