My 6 year grandson comes often to visit us. He loves chickens, feeding them and gathering eggs.
I just dread the situation if he sees rooster mating a hen. I really don’t know what I should tell him.
Any advice is appreciated.
thanks
Hello chicken enthusiasts!
Back in April, I was only able to get two barred rock (due to some specific circumstances). I had them in the run for a few weeks, so that they would know that it was their home and such.
My older flock, free ranges and would come and go from the run as they would...

My flock is 17 weeks and 1 day and with the exception of my rooster that was gifted to me that’s for sure over a year. I have 2 rhode island reds, 2 light brahmas, and two prairie bluebell easter eggers. I have seen absolutely none of the girls squat or lay eggs but for the last few days I’ve...
Hi so I'm having issues with introducing my 2 new chicks to the flock. For reference my original flock is made of all silkies and has my roo and hen and then they have 5, 14 week old chicks. So since their chicks are 14 weeks already and I can already see some of them are roos I decided that it...
i want to get a rooster or two next year but i don’t want to if the ladies will feel harassed by his behavior. i know they don’t think about stuff the way we do but i don’t like the idea of some roo running around and grabbing my unwilling ladies by the neck. i plan to get a silkie since they...
People bought a trio of button quails a week ago, I'm sure it is a male and two females, even though my male does not have the collar he has the colors blue and brick red that I was told here even though only the males have. My question is the following, since I bought them I haven't seen them...
Hello! I am new here, not new to chickens (and an aviary with many other types of birds). I have a very interesting question. I have tried to research and cannot find anything.
I have a solo turkey hen in the aviary and a ring-neck pheasant pair. The male pheasant has been "mating" with my...
I’ve noticed some wild ducks landing in our creek with our domestic flock. They seem to get along and get closer than I thought they would have. My son wants them to breed our hens so we can have a wood duck mix. I told him probably unlikely but it sparked some curiosity. Has anyone had any...
Hey guys,
I have a silkie hen who recently started "refusing" our rooster's advances and now is fighting with him. They were raised together and they've never had issues before-she was his favorite and is the head hen.
Is this a little "lover's quarrel", or will I never get fertile eggs from her...
My Pekin drake's advances on my lone Rouen girl were thwarted the entire afternoon by one of my Pekin girls.. she ran interference and put herself between the two of them and honked like a goose at him. I haven't seen him trying to be amorous before but they're only a little shy of a year old...
well the title sums it up but anyway i have a 14 week EE who i hatched (no other eggs were successful) so i got him a stuffed dinosaur to cuddle with in the brooder. it was hard to find chicks in december/january but in february i happened to find Sophie, a RSL x leghorn, who is the same age as...
Hey guys ! Can someone help me figure out what's wrong with my chickens? Almost all of them are missing feathers on their backs. It doesn't seem to be bothering them though. I've tried checking for mites or lice but don't see anything on them. I don't believe it's my rooster over mating as I...
I have one macho rooster and a couple little bantam roosters that have all but plucked all the feathers from the back of my hens’ heads when they’ve mated. It doesn’t seem to bother the girls and they’re not being pecked at by other hens, so should I just let it be? Is there something I can do...
How many eggs will a male turkey fertilize in one mating session? If I keep collecting the turkey eggs, how many will be fertile until they are no longer fertile? My male and female have done the deed and I know my first 3 are fertile as they are in the incubator. As far as I know, they have...
hi - yesterday i saw my female duck literally on top of my male duck, the male was laying on the floor and the female was like standing on top of him. i googled this and im pretty sure they are mating? but i did more research and i guess mating is when the male is on top, so i am super confused...
I love Hitoko, but don’t always have time to follow him around when he’s out of his tank getting into trouble. So I knew I needed a friend for him. ...but I’ve only ever had bad luck hatching my own eggs, partially due to a garbage incubator. So he’s never gotten a little
i don’t have a...
So my male pekin is coming up on 4 months old and he is obsessed with trying to mate with me! He has females but he’s not interested?😩 it’s getting to the point where I’m covered in bruises from him and don’t know how to make him stop! I thought he wanted a lovely cuddle last night and to my...
Hi! Sorry for the dramatic help, but I do not know what to do. My female duck wants to mate and does the flirting things like head bobbing and flattening body in water, but I keep seeing her peck at his eyes in the water. I think he just wants to be in the water, plus he seems to already be...
I have four ducks:
Midnight (Cayuga), Male
Chocolate (Khaki Campbell) Male
Goldie (Pekin) Female
Half-pint (Mallard) Male (for sure thought it was a female till last weekend)
I have 3 males and a female, poor Goldie has had both Chocolate & Midnight bobbing their heads in front of her trying to...
I have a flock of 12 laying hens and 5 pullets, 1 mature rooster and 4 cockerels.
The young ones are 20 weeks old and should soon start reaching maturity. I would like to keep all of the roosters since they free range most of the time but due to local ordinances, all chickens must be held...
