One of my hens was severely pecked by another hen. We have isolated the aggressive hen but the other hen has a very nasty wound on the back of her neck. It looks like a hole and it is bubbling and fizzing. Ive never seen a wound do that before. Any suggestions on what I should do?
First, I have had chickens for about 5 years and this is the first year I've had problems getting the older ones used to the new, little ones (12 weeks old). I have been noticing they were picking on one in particular. It is one of the littlest. Yesterday, I found her trapped by the older...
Hello! I am brand new to the chicken raising scene and just got my chickens two weeks ago. They are 9 weeks old and I have one Swedish Flower Hen, two Blue Splash Marans, and one golden laced wyandotte. No roosters. I don't know what molting looks like but I also don't know if they are pecking...
So we have a bunch of girls that are missing tons of feathers. They are missing a lot of them on the backs of their heads and on their backs just above their tails. (See pictures) They looked awesome all winter. I let them molt this year. This started maybe 2 weeks ago. Tonight we had a dead...
My 4 week chicks were picking on the 2 cochins in the bunch til the point of bleeding. On advice I got from BYC I sent hubby out for Blue Kote but the store only had Rooster Booster pick no more. It is working well on the smaller chick with more extensive injuries. However when trying to do the...
My chicks are 4 weeks. They have ample room for the 10 of them but today they decided to peck the 2 cochin chicks (mixed breeds...all standard) until they are bleeding (one is our smallest chick and she has a lot of blood near the tail and the other just a little along the back where his...
Ok don't judge me *too* harshly; I just thought this was too funny.
Today I have a sick husband and and injured hen in "the infirmary" (our den). Husband wa sleeping and I decided to briefly let Chuck (our hen) out of her quarantine cage so she could stretch her legs while I changed the...
We got 6 day-old chicks in January-one each of the following: ameracauna, buff Orpington, barred rock, silkie, Rhode Island Red, and a Polish. After a few weeks in the brooder we noticed that the Polish was being pecked on the head. She had a small sore and was missing feathers. We isolated her...
Pumpkin, my Buff Orpington, has started picking out and eating the feathers of my two Dark Brahmas. I only noticed this behavior actively about a week ago—she had always shown some interest in pecking at their foot feathers, but I had never seen her actually pulling out feathers and eating them...
I'm quite new to keeping chickens. We got our three girls from the same brood as pullets around 7 months ago and until now they have been quite happy living together. We get a solid three eggs a a day even through the cold times. There has been a clear leader from the start but there has been no...
When I went to check on the birbs this morning I found one of the quails in a sorry state. I caught the male quail redhanded, he pecked out her neck feathers (not even mounting) and another hen went for her head. I separated her from the flock in the other pen I have. What should I do? Any...
We have 2 Rhode Island Red hens that are 1 year old. They free range during the day on 5 acres, and put themselves in the coop at night. We have 6 new pullets (mixed breeds) we are trying to introduce to them this week, and it isn't going well. There has been some minor blood drawn on all...
I have 47 week old chickens I need to add to the coop… I have tried to add them in the past Week… By putting a kennel inside the run and keeping them visible but separated… Today I tried to let them all join together… One hen is very aggressive with them... so I put them back in the kennel... I...
Okay, I’ll admit it. I am COMPLETELY at my wits’ end with an outbreak of feather picking. The whole disaster started in early January when my 18 hens (who are now 11 months old) chose to stay in the coop during extremely cold, snowy weather. They had a large run available, but didn’t like the...
Hello all. Advice needed please...
I have a dozen laying hens, no rooster and a large coop. Could park a car inside.
My father is a rancher and has a calf that lost his mother and is giving him to my boys to bottle feed and raise. Could the (2day old) calf live in the coop for a few days while...
I have 9 Buff Orpingtons who are almost 3 weeks old, 4 RIR (almost 2 weeks) and 2 Ameraucanas (almost 2 weeks). They were introduced slowly about a week ago and have done great...until now.
I noticed one of the RIRs is missing some feathers/down on the side of her neck. Skin looks irritated...
My chicks are about 3 weeks old and I've had them for two weeks. I just noticed today that most of them have what appears to be peck marks on their backs! Feathers are missing, and some are even bleeding! What is going on and why??
- It's the same spot on all of them.
- Some have it worse than...
Hi all!
I have about 20 or so chickens (Australorps, Barnevelders, Isa Reds and one lovely Wyandotte) and I'm noticing that about six of them that were all hatched out in the same batch are plucking their lower back feathers out and eating them (I'm assuming). We have one large Australorp...
I need some input. I have a broody hen with (her babies) about two weeks old in one brooder in our basement. She's a very good mom to her babies and teaching them the ropes. I have another brooder with about 30 day old chicks that we hatched from our incubator. The Mother Hen in the other...
Friends recently purchased this hen and add her to the already existing flock. To my surprise she was pecked by one hen. But today I found her in this state. Even some piece of flesh was torn.
Will she get fine
