We’re fairly new to hobby farming (just shy of a year) and this is the first time I’ve seen the “clearance bin” of chics at Tractor Supply. I don’t know if it’s like that at every store, but it was truly awful at the store I went to . In the 10 minutes we were there, the lady took out 4 dead chics (all dead from being trampled). I cannot believe how many they had in this bin and the size differences were way too great! It looked like 2 week old chics with day old chics!

Anyway, we were horrified and somehow left with 36 new chics! Thank goodness our new barn with massive chicken coop is almost done because I think that now puts us around 91 chickens!!

Congrats on your new chicks, but for crying out loud! TSC seriously needs to hire some people who actually know something about poultry and waterfowl! I got some "clearance" ducklings a while back and there were significant size/age differences between the ducklings in the stock tank. :hmm

A TSC employee told me that they do the "fire sale" thing because they're only allowed to keep some specific number at a time (100, per my recollection).

It's got to be more than that; the Rural King has at least ten bins of various breeds during chick days, and there's definitely more than ten chicks per bin. (Unless it varies by store?)

My daughter works for a tractor supply, sadly they have had deceased and injured chicks. She is the only one who will take the injured ones home to give them a chance at life. Unfortunately poultry is not considered a pet worthy animal.

See, I grew up on a farm. I don't have a problem with deceased or injured chicks. Those happen, and you can't save everything. I don't have that much money, or that much time. My chickens, excepting a select few, are livestock.

But management failures are something that can absolutely be prevented, and cruelty is inexcusable.

Yes I agree, but like you said she has seen chicks crushed by employees that just don't pay attention to what they are doing. I believe like the post person said, over stocking the tanks contributes to this.

Wow do they really need to walk in the tanks? I would think they just reach over. It's like 2ft tall.
