➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Meanwhile, back at the quail emporium and nut house...

The stuck chick was ripped into this world. Malpositioned at this point. A little time in the incubator (chick was mostly dry already) and plopped into the brooder with all the others. Everyone was alive and well this morning. Huddled into the corner. As soon as the light hit them, off to the water trough. QB#6 of 2019 off to a roaring start.

The last 3 eggs that didn't pip are pulled. Didn't have time to investigate. Had to get the living situated.

I'm brooding outside from day one. The heat lamp and light didn't stabilize to my liking. The one I used for all the other hatches broke. Guessing the ceramic heat bulb overheated the cheap metal bracket and plastic switch pieces. Mostly metal isn't good enough.

I think I'm moving my babies outside today...with no heat.

Elegant? You fool. Nothing is more elegant than ramming a tank into a place where HOAs lurk and scheme. The very definition of disorder against order.
Everyone has their own approach, I muse.

Tanks and elevators. Both very mechanical. I really figured you would make some adjustments to the HOA elevators to change the attitude of city hall.

So a totally unrelated question, did you see the horror movie where the escalator was eating people?

MixedUPturk sorry for not getting back to you sooner about the eggs. My phone has not been active sence the 6th. Today it just came to mind I could get a hold of you on Backyard Chickens.:D dont know why did not think of it sooner.:he When i reactivate my phone on Wednesday I'll
send you a pick of the box and the eggs on the day i got them.:jumpy

Jusy kidding! i figured it was some kind of a technological issue and im just glad to hear that theyre okay :thumbsup

Is anyone setting eggs around Sept 13th? I know @Matieus27 is waiting for arrival... (Sorry @Matieus27 I don't know if you are a 'she' or a 'he' :hmm) Anyone else?

Tempting, but even I shan't meddle with safety systems.
No, I don't watch horror movies, though I did see a scene in the X-Files once where someone got ground up by an escalator—0/10, the on/off system was ALL wrong.

That's ludicrous? Dogs bark all the time...they gona 'outlaw' dogs in your town, too? You might try getting a coalition together and hiring an attorney to fight city hall, at least have an injunction put on the new ordinance from taking place.

That’s what I’ve never understood!! People complain about roosters all the time yet dogs are constantly barking all day long (thankfully not here :fl but occasionally you hear barking), kids screaming or crying/playing/laughing/otherwise making noise (nothing against kids, I like them and I am glad they are happy and having fun, but they are loud so including them in the list of things louder than roosters lol), lawnmowers & weedwhackers & leaf blowers and such and/or landscapers working and all usually going in the very early morning too and all day if it’s a crew or they do the neighborhood, airplanes or helicopters going by, trains, cars/highway noise, (we happen to have all 3 of those. Close enough to the highway to hear it, directly under a flight path, and a train a few miles away), car alarms going off, people blaring their music (thankfully that also doesn’t happen :fl ), sirens (ambulance, police, fire trucks, etc.), people fighting loudly, people having parties, (thankfully we never have either of those issues either but sometimes we can hear the neighbors talking or the kids), fireworks, wildlife, etc. etc. I can think of many, many things more annoying than a rooster haha

Granted, roosters do sometimes crow in the middle of the night or like super early before daybreak and some do crow all day but still. Not all of them crow all day or very early.

Also wild birds can be very annoying too!

We live in a somewhat wooded area despite also being in a neighborhood/close to people (our house is surrounded by trees/woods and long driveway) and there are some seriously loud animals!

Right now I am listening to crickets, some other bug that’s like a buzz/hum and irritating me, the frogs in the little pond in the garden, and some birds. The frogs, the crickets, and the birds are actually kinda nice.

Always sooo many birds though.

Sometimes they are nice and pleasant like the ones calling right now but sometimes they literally like caw? Best word I know to describe it so dang loud!!! No idea what species but I think blue jays and crows? The jays are so loud!! Always screaming or cawing lol and crows are very loud when they are harassing hawks!!

Also sometimes we hear chipmunks or squirrels communicate to each other or to me with their chatter. And during breeding season, we sometimes hear the tom turkeys gobbling in the woods. And sometimes we can hear coyotes calling and/or hunting in the woods at night.

Soooo..... there is A LOT that is louder than a rooster. At least in our area. I actually think the wildlife in the area may have everything beat. :lau cause it is usually pretty quiet but the wildlife is alway loud lol

Nothing can be louder than those dang jays! :lau

ALSO.

Quail aren’t even as loud as roosters! They are wayyyy quieter and sound like a song bird, right? They would blend right in here. :lau

Or wolf whistle, like mine use to do...it embarrassed me on several occasions.

Oh wow :lau

OMG! LOL

Social media is a powerful place to raise hell.
Get yourself on the news.
:D

Good idea! That might be faster and more effective haha and also that way they couldn’t try to pass any sneaky backhanded laws! You could go on and say they tried to tell me I had to get rid of my animals but there is no law in place that says so or something like that. Make it seem like they’re trying to do it backhanded/illegally. People will be pissed lol

Is it a local story?

So violent! I never would have expected this from such a dear Batty.

A tank? Really? So traceable. Ugh. There are more elegant approaches. I'm more interested in who is complaining that has that much pull with city hall.

:lau

A witch, that probably thinks she owns the neighborhood.

Probably!! Those are the worst lol or the people that move to the country then complain about the noise!! Like that case with the rooster in France. They won thankfully.

Awwww :love

That sounds like a weird movie lol and I hate horror movies but I think I would laugh at one that ridiculous. :lau

Tempting, but even I shan't meddle with safety systems.

Good to know you have standards. :lau

And that sounds awful. ;)

I sat more eggs last night. Does that count? It's around the 13th.

QB#7 is in the incubator. I've got to modify the quail rail to fit. I'm hand turning 9 eggs (when I remember). That sounds like a good project for this evening.

:frow I'll be setting some sometime this week probably!

I'm also finalizing my plans for the critter shed.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M22Y1AU/?tag=backy-20

Tis going to be one of these suckers (although I'm hunting around for better deals) with a replaced solid roof, cinderblocks lining the bottom, insulated sides, an electric poultry netting cover and a thick layer of deep litter/compost at the bottom. We're going to slap a solar panel on top to help keep the water reservoir unfrozen during the winter and power fans for both the shed and the greenhouse in the summer. It's the best way I've found to get the space I want at a price we can swing. And it tucks up nice and hidden behind my greenhouse!

I haunted craigslist and drove 1.5 round trip with 40' of chain link dog kennel panels for the chicken yard for little less than half price of new. Then I found out how easy it was to run 5' wire fencing and T-posts. More bang for the buck but more time to erect.

Consider the 5' fencing. Not the welded wire. The horse fence I was told was better and doesn't fall apart. Lowe's has it. Found second hand T-posts for half the price and drove another 1.5 hour round trip. Look at all the money I'm saving by raising birds!

Seriously considering a cattle panel aviary. Seriously. Raise it up 2 feet so I can stand up. Reinforce the edges. Greenhouse! Wrap in greenhouse plastic for winter. You know, both days it gets below 60°F. May need to wrap the bananas too.
