12x12" pavers = predator proof?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to backyard chickening and getting ready to set up my coop (1.5 week old chicks are in brooder now). My question re: the coop and run: is it generally considered predator-proofing to set the base of the coop and the run on 12x12 inch concrete pavers? I understand the other option is to put wire mesh 8 inches deep into the soil, but I can't do that myself and would prefer the concrete paver method if in fact this is a good way to protect against raccoons, possums, groundhogs etc...

I appreciate this forum so much! Such great help here :)

Thanks,

Robin

Setting it on pavers will not make it predator proof because they can dig under it, I like the idea of using them with a apron of wire around the whole thing, it will be alot easier than digging a trench.

Jetdog,

How do you construct an apron of wire without digging a trench 8 inches down? I can't picture it....

Thanks :)

If you attach it to the bottom of the run you can either bend it so the wire looks like an L coming out at least a foot, or attach to the run so it comes out on to the lawn or what ever you have around the run. Eventually the grass will grow up and you'll never know it's there, I've heard people recommend using landscape staples to secure it to the ground so the lawn mower doesn't grab the wire. If you do a search on here there are some pictures of the apron people have posted if I didn't explain it clearly.
