20250405_142407.jpg This an 8x10 shed that I'm repurposing into a coop. It currently sits on a wood foundation that needs to go since it has been harboring at least one opossum that I see occasionally (my dog chase it for kicks) and I've see a few mice come and go on occasion. None of this was a problem until I got chickens.

I know it needs a lot of work to be chicken worthy . . . ventilation, roof that doesn't leak, roosts, nest boxes and so on, but let's start at the bottom, the foundation . . . 20250405_142516.jpg
I plan to set it where my current run is so the entire perimeter would be dig proof since there's a concrete border the same size as the shed. The 'floor' of the shed would be open to the ground so there'll be leaf litter and grass (until it dies from lack of sun) for the chickens to rummage through for whatever tidbits might be lurking there. I plan to do the same as I did with the run and screw/nail the shed to 6x6 beams (the run sits on 4x4's for added weight) since the ground can get wet/mucky when it rains.

Here comes the question: I'm thinking about adding sand/gravel about 2-3 inches deep to provide adequate drainage then put pelletized bedding on top of that.

Does that sound like a good idea, or should I just add the pelletized bedding as needed when/if the ground in the coop gets wet. I'm going for the deep litter method of coop cleaning/maintenance.

How do you plan to anchor the shed to the ground?
It'll be screwed to 6x6 beams with 3in (or longer) screws, if that doesn't keep it from blowing away I don't think a few ropes would make much of a difference.

The other reason I decided to set it on 6x6 posts is the ground can get saturated and ropes and anchors become pretty much useless.
